Monday AM Water Cooler – March 8, 2010

Here we go with today’s EARLY sports water cooler talk. Here, you won’t just find the straight news; you’ll find the stuff everyone is talking about – the ice breakers, the Twitter Sports Picks and topics…well, basically all the stuff you discuss at the water cooler.

Enjoy!

The wheeling and dealing – not to mention the rumor mongering – continues in the NFL as we kick off the week’s news.

NFL news: T.O. to Bengals? Roethlisberger to courtroom?

We shouldn’t be surprised, should we? The Bengals have made a living picking prickly personalities off the scrap heap; two seasons ago, it was Cedric Benson. Last year it was Larry Johnson. Could Terrell Owens be next? The Bengals are reportedly thinking about bringing the over-the-hill wideout on board. The thought of T.O. and Chad Ochocinco celebrating touchdowns together is pretty mindboggling.

Speaking of mindboggling – how about another sexual assault accusation for Ben Roethlisberger? Police are investigating him after a Georgia college student claimed he sexually assaulted her early Friday morning. The incident allegedly happened in the small town of Milledgeville and the police are expected to provide an update on the investigation today.

Back to the good news. Some more signings happened over the weekend, the first of 2010 free agency. The Jaguars snagged Aaron Kampmann while the Packers retained Chad Clifton and the Patriots held onto Vince Wilfork.

NBA news: Lakers lost three straight for first time in two years

It’s not exactly time to panic but a three-game losing streak is enough to raise eyebrows when you’re the Los Angeles Lakers.

On their home court, the Orlando Magic edged them in a thriller on Sunday, Kobe Bryant had a chance to beat the buzzer but missed, sealing the 96-94 win for Orlando in an NBA Finals rematch.

Sigh. Today’s sign of the apocalypse: Cleveland Cavaliers fans set a record Friday night for “largest gathering of people wearing fleece blankets.” Yes, everyone in the crowd was wearing a Snuggie. I have to say – as comfy as those things are, I can’t stand the static. I get a shock if I put one on.

Looks like the Spurs’ usual plan of waiting until the second half to “try” may backfire this year. Tony Parker broke his hand in San Antonio’s victory over Memphis on Saturday night and is expected to miss up to six weeks. Can the Spurs make the playoffs without him?

NHL news: Savard gets rocked; Letterman gets snubbed

It was too good to be true – we’d gone several weeks without a high-profile player taking a head shot. Sunday, Marc Savard became the latest casualty of the world’s fastest game. He took a blindside shoulder to the head from Matt Cooke and was carted off on a stretcher Sunday night.

Is Sid the Kid’s head getting too big after winning the gold medal for Canada with an overtime goal?

He declined an invitation to appear on Late Night with David Letterman last week. Hmmm. I suppose he was eager to return to the busy NHL life but (a) hockey could’ve really used the extra PR and (b) was it really that much of a stretch for him?

The Pens were visiting the Rangers last week. How bad would a talk-show appearance have been? Wrong move, Sid.
