Friday Water Cooler – May 7th, 2010

Here we go with today’s sports water cooler talk. Here, you won’t just find the straight news; you’ll find the stuff everyone is talking about – the ice breakers, the Twitter Sports Picks and topics…well, basically all the stuff you discuss at the water cooler.

Enjoy!

Jeff Baker

Chicago Cubs second baseman Jeff Baker’s story may not be the most important news of the day.

But it’s so strange that I have to lead off with it today.

MLB news: Baker burns his bottom?

I’ll file this one under “So crazy it must be true.” The rumor surrounding Jeff Baker goes as follows. He was in the clubhouse with an unnamed pitcher trying to light his farts on fire. The fun when awry and Baker ended up with second degree burns on his backside. The pitcher (I’m guessing Carlos Zambrano?) suffered a mild burn on this throwing hand.

Eventually, Bakers burn’s became blisters. Then, during Tuesday’s game, Baker didn’t take the field when called upon as a pinch hitter.

The reason: his blisters burst and released so much water that Ryan Theriot accused Baker of wetting himself. Fact or fiction? I think “fun’ is the best word.

NFL news: Lawrence Taylor charged with rape; Raiders release JaMarcus Russell

We were well aware of his checkered past, which included everything from drug addiction to tax evasion. But Hall-of-Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor was supposed to be a poster boy for redemption. That’s why it was especially disappointing to learn that he was arrested and charged with raping a 16-year-old girl yesterday.

Taylor allegedly used a middle man to force the girl to have sex with him and will next appear in court on the charges on June 10.

Let the “biggest draft bust ever?” questions begin. Even the crazy Oakland Raiders realized it was time to cut bait on JaMarcus Russell. On Thursday, they released the former No. 1 overall pick after he went 7-18 as a starter in the NFL.

Russell battled weight problems throughout his short (but rich) career and was eventually labelled as “lazy.”But is he really the biggest bust ever?

I’d argue that many scouts saw Russell’s demise coming a mile away. Ryan Leaf, on the other hand, was viewed as much more of a can’t-miss guy. That’s my two cents.

NBA news: D-Wade eying Pat Riley as his next coach?

I can’t imagine how crazy the 2010 offseason will be considering the rumors are already swirling out of control with the season still going.

The latest revolves around Dwyane Wade, who reportedly could be open to a coaching change in Miami that would put Pat Riley behind the bench.

He was non-committal when asked it about it this week, however, pointing out that he’s won a title with Riley but also struggled through a 15-win season with Riley.

NHL news: Bruins lose Krejci for playoffs; Flyers may get Gagne back

Maybe the tide is about to turn in the Bruins/Flyers series? Boston has a 3-0 stranglehold, largely because the Flyers have battled so many injuries, but things are starting to balance out. Bruins center David Krejci dislocated his wrist in Game 3 after taking a vicious hit from Mike Richards and will miss the rest of the playoffs after having surgery to repair the injury.

He joins Marco Sturm and Adam McQuaid among Bruins to get knocked out of the series.

Meanwhile, Simon Gagne may return early from a broken toe for the Flyers, who would welcome his offense.

Could Gagne be enough to keep the series going?
