The last 24 hours in the sports world had a prevailing theme: new beginnings. We saw a coaching change, a retirement and a mega-contract signing. So who did what? Keep reading to find out.

MLB news: Holliday returns, Big Unit retires

Apparently willing to forgive Matt Holliday for costing his team the NLDS on his ball-in-the-groin routine, the St. Louis Cardinals re-upped in a big way with the big outfielder yesterday. They signed him to a seven-year, $120-million deal. Really puts the hilarity of the Vernon Wells deal into perspective, doesn’t it? The Jays gave the megabust the same money as Holliday – over six years. Holliday hit .353 with 55 RBI in 63 games after joining St. Louis last year but the Cards are ultimately paying for protection more than anything else. Albert Pujols is all the more dangerous with Holliday next to him in the batting order. Betting on World Series futures? The Cards offer nice sleeper value.

Sadly, the most dominant strikeout pitcher of the last 20 years called it quits yesterday. Randy Johnson’s 6’10” frame finally broke down last season and the Big Unit said goodbye after 303 wins, five Cy Young Awards, a perfect-game, a no-hitter and more strikeouts than any human not named Nolan Ryan. Thanks for a great ride, Randy. And please grow back your mullet.

NFL news: Shanahan, Snyder, Obama battle for control in D.C.

Barack Obama is the most important man in Washington D.C. but don’t tell Mike Shanahan or Dan Snyder that. Shanahan officially signed with the Redskins yesterday and will try and fix one of football’s most consistently underachieving franchises. But can he and insane owner Dan Snyder coexist? We’ll find out. Big names like Norv Turner, Marty Schottenheimer, Steve Spurrier and Joe Gibbs couldn’t survive there.

NCAA football news: Triple option not unstoppable after all

I guess having six weeks to prepare was enough for Iowa. Online Sports Betting at Sportsbook The Hawkeyes solved Georgia Tech’s seemingly invincible triple-option offense en route to a 24-14 victory. The Yellow Jackets’ nine first downs and 155 total yards were season lows. Iowa’s Ricky Stanzi had more scores than turnovers for a change, throwing for two touchdowns and getting picked off once.

NBA news: Rare road win too good to be true for Warriors

Do you think Don Nelson could just feel it last night? With Golden State up by one, Denver’s J.R. Smith threw up a last-second prayer and missed. He walked off the court, dejected. Finally, a road win for the Warriors. But in his heart of hearts, Nelson knew it all seemed too easy. Low and behold, the ref signals that Monta Ellis fouled Smith on his Hail Mary shot. Next thing you know, Smith drains two free throws and the Nuggets win it. Some teams are just cursed.

Golf news: Tiger sex tape? Tiger sex tape!?

Calm down. I said calm down! Nothing is confirmed yet but notorious celebrity gossip outlet TMZ reports that Steven Hirsch, head of the porn juggernaut Vivid, claims a woman contacted him two weeks ago claiming to own a sex tape of Tiger Woods. Even if the video exists, however, it couldn’t legally be released without Tiger signing off on it.
