Tuesday Water Cooler – May 4th, 2010

Enjoy!

Is it insensitive of me to call today’s news electrifying? Read on and decide for yourself.

MLB news: Phillies fan tasered by police; Justin Bieber gets lucky in Chicago

Better think twice the next time you want to impress your friends at the game. A 17-year-old male Phillies fan at Citizen’s Bank Park learned that the hard way yesterday. He sprinted onto the field and dodged around for a few moments before a Philadelphia police officer dropped him with a Taser gun from 15 feet out.

The weirdest part? The kid claims that he called his dad to ask permission before running onto the field, though his dad said he didn’t grant said permission. Considering that the kid wasn’t threatening anybody, the Taser job seems a bit excessive from the cops, no? Watch The Video – CLICK HERE

Ever heard of that little pretty boy singer, Justin Bieber? Your daughter probably has. The teen pop star threw out the first pitch at U.S. Cellular Field to open last night’s White Sox game…and then caught a foul ball.

As if he didn’t have enough going for him already, a foul ball off Paul Konerko’s bat bounced right into Bieber’s suite.

NFL news: Favre may retire; Sharper returns to Saints

Take it for what it’s worth, but we have a new Brett Favre rumor to chew on. According to SI’s Peter King, Favre told an unnamed NFL player that he’s “100 per cent positive I’ll never put on pads again in my life.” We’ve heard that before, haven’t we?

After a bit of deliberation, All-Pro safety Darren Sharper is returning to the defending Super Bowl champion Saints after all. He’s a welcome returnee to New Orleans after picking off nine passes and returning three interceptions for touchdowns in 2009.

NBA news: The Vinny Del Negro era ends in Chicago

No big surprise here. Vinny Del Negro is no longer the Chicago Bulls’ head coach. He wasn’t an absolute train wreck, leading the Bulls to consecutive playoff appearances and a .500 record over two seasons, but his bad relationship with team Vice-President John Paxson did him in.

As I reported on this blog a few weeks ago, Paxson and Del Negro had a physical altercation after a March 30 game because Paxson felt Del Negro played Joakim Noah too many minutes.

NHL news: Sharks accused of diving, Savard accused of biting

The bad blood is boiling nicely in round two of the NHL playoffs. Detroit Red Wing fans are outraged after San Jose had 10 power plays to Detroit’s four in Game 2 of the Western conference semi-final, which had some pretty suspect officiating.

Wings fans believe the Sharks are diving.

Speaking of diving Sharks. After Joe Pavelski scored in Game 2, a crazy San Jose fan one-upped Detroit’s octopus tradition by heaving a shark onto the ice. In the shark’s mouth?

Why,  baby octopus, of course.

Another creature with a fierce bite is…Marc Savard? Flyer enforcer Dan Carcillo claimed Savard bit him during Game 2 of the Boston/Philly series last night. He called Savard a coward and said he “hadn’t been bitten since grade school.” Sounds like someone needs a time out.
