Monday Water Cooler – May 3rd, 2010

Here we go with today’s sports water cooler talk. Here, you won’t just find the straight news; you’ll find the stuff everyone is talking about – the ice breakers, the Twitter Sports Picks and topics…well, basically all the stuff you discuss at the water cooler.

Enjoy!

Not surprisingly, the weekend in sports provided us with a little bit of everything, including awards, Twitter scandals, and hospital visits. Let’s get caught up on the news.

NBA news: Karl back in hospital; LeBron wins MVP; Bosh offends fans via Twitter

George Karl’s up-and-down battle with cancer continues. He was rushed to the hospital Friday afternoon with another blood clot in his leg, which was presumably caused by chemotherapy treatment for malignant cells in his throat and neck. Doctors reinserted a filter into his abdomen to prevent clots from travelling to his heart or lungs.

In more upbeat news, LeBron James won the NBA MVP award in runaway fashion for the second straight year. He earned 116 of 123 possible first-place votes and is the 10th player to win consecutive MVP awards.

One guy still seeking his first MVP award, Chris Bosh, got himself into hot water with Toronto Raptor fans late last week. The soon-to-be free agented Tweeted “Where should I go next season” and “Should I say or should I go?” I guess a little honesty can hurt after all.

MLB news: Dye won’t play for $1.5 million; Mariners release Byrnes after bizarre weekend

Well, looks like Orlando Hudson’s conspiracy theory of a month ago just lost a whole lot of steam. Free agent outfielder Jermaine Dye was recently quoted in the Chicago Sun-Times claiming that he (a) won’t sign with a bad team and (b) won’t play for $1.5 million. Hmpf. Apparently beggars can be choosers after all.

Hey – maybe the Seattle Mariners should look at Dye. They released outfielder Eric Byrnes after a downright bizarre sequence of events that began on Friday night. During a suicide-squeeze attempt in extra innings of a scoreless game, Byrnes randomly pulled back his bat. Naturally, Ichiro, who was tearing home from third, was tagged out.

After the Mariners wound up losing the game, tore out of Seattle’s clubhouse on a bicycle just minutes after the game and made a turn right around Seattle general manager Jack Zdurienick before the pair could make eye contact. He spent the rest of the weekend watching movies in the clubhouse. Any wonder that he got the boot? If you needed more evidence – he hit a sparkling .094 in 15 games this season.

NHL news: Youth hockey league in hot water over beer incident

Oh, YouTube. How did the sports world function without thee in the past? We’d miss out on so many gems – like an idiot filming 10-year-old children with open alcohol containers in a dressing room. Sigh. Sure, it’s a shame that political correctness prevents us from taking a joke these days, but anyone who hands empty beer cans to kids, films them “enjoying beers after the game” and expects no disciplinary action probably doesn’t know what the Internet is. Needless to say, the Saskatchewan camera man has been suspended.

NFL news: Favre needs surgery to play next season

Don’t expect the Brett Favre saga to die down any time soon. After all, he needs surgery on his ankle to play in 2010. That means we can look forward to a “Will Favre have surgery”? clock before we even get to the “Will Favre return?” clock.
