Sports News – NBA news: New York Nicks acquire Carmelo Anthony; Shane Battier to Celtics? Jarrett Jack arrested

New York Nicks acquire Carmelo Anthony

The Melo-Drama is finally over. In the end, it was the New York Nicks, not the New Jersey Nets, who won the sweepstakes.

The 12-player deal that brought Carmelo Anthony back to his native New York went down Monday night and also involved the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Denver Nuggets received Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov, Golden State’s 2012 and 2013 second-round picks, the Knicks’ 2014 first-round pick and $3 million in cash.

The Knicks received Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Anthony Carter, Renaldo Balkman and Corey Brewer (from the Timberwolves). Minnesota received Eddy Curry and Anthony Randolph from New York.

Could Shane Battier soon become a Boston Celtic? The swingman has become a popular target for Boston with the Celtics’ Marquis Daniels and Delonte West both struggling with injuries. No word yet on what the Celtics could send back to Houston. They’re also reportedly interested in the Cavaliers’ Anthony Parker.

New Orleans Hornets guard Jarrett Jack was arrested Saturday night in Atlanta for a DUI. However, he wasn’t tested for blood-alcohol content until 90 minutes after the arrest. He then blew a 0.79; the legal limit is 0.8. So Jack might get off without a penalty.

NHL news: Penguins trade Goligoski to Stars for Neal, Niskanen; Mikko Koivu out with broken finger

The Pittsburgh Penguins and Dallas Stars struck a deal yesterday. Did Pittsburgh make off like a bandit in this one? Sure, they gave up a quality defenseman in Goligoski, who has 31 points in 60 games this year. But they received James Neal and Matt Niskanen in return.

Neal, just 23 years old, already has three straight 20-goal seasons to his name to start his career. Niskanen is more of a stay-at-home defenseman but is steady and just 24 years old.

The Minnesota Wild’s playoff chances took a major hit this week. Mikko Koivu injured his finger blocking a shot on Friday and it was revealed Monday that he’ll have surgery to repair a broken finger. Koivu leads Minnesota with 49 points this season.

NFL news: League, union meet for fifth straight day

Still hopeful of striking a new collective bargaining agreement before the current one expires on March 3, the NFL and the players will meet for a fifth straight day today. Pittsburgh Steelers backup quarterback Charlie Batch, an NFLPA member, said Monday that the talks were going well but did not mention any specifics about the process.

MLB news: Mark Prior throws batting practice to Yankees; female pitcher throws BP to Indians; Hank Steinbrenner questions Yankees’ motivation 2010

Mark Prior isn’t quite done yet. The former superstar pitcher threw live batting practice to the New York Yankees at training camp yesterday. He hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2006 but the Yankee signed him to a minor-league deal this offseason.

Another surprising name threw live batting practice yesterday: Justine Segal. The female pitcher threw to the Cleveland Indians in Arizona and will throw to the Oakland Athletics at their camp on Wednesday.

Hank Steinbrenner, the New York Yankees’ co-chairman, called out his team’s 2010 effort this week, accusing them of suffering a hangover from their 2009 World Series win. “Sometimes you celebrate too much, players concentrating on building mansions and not concentrating on winning,” he said.

The comment is perceived as a shot at Derek Jeter, who just finished having a multimillion dollar home in Tampa built.
