MLB news: White Sox sign Adam Dunn; Pat Burrell returns to Giants; Ron Santo dead at 70

White Sox sign Adam Dunn

The Chicago White Sox made a big free-agent splash yesterday, locking up slugger Adam Dunn with a four-year, $56-million deal. The 31-year-old has been the model of consistency for home run hitting during his career; he has at least 38 homers in seven straight seasons. Surprisingly, Dunn may not be a pure replacement for free agent Paul Konerko after all. Reportedly, the White Sox still hope to re-sign him.

Pat Burrell, rumored to be Brian Wilson’s S&M outfit-wearing buddy “The Machine,” will return to party it up in San Francisco for another year. He signed a one-year deal with the World Series champs. Burrell actually struggled in the World Series, going 0 for 13 with 11 strikeouts, but he was a useful contributor in the regular season, swatting 18 homers in 96 games. If you want to read some ridiculous, hilarious tales of an athlete living the good life, Google “Pat Burrell stories.” It’ll be worth your while.

The Chicago Cubs have lost of their legends. Ron Santo is dead at 70 years old. He was a nine-time All-Star during his 15-year career and considered by many one of the best players never inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He was also a longtime WGN radio announcer for the team after his playing career. He passed away due to complications from bladder cancer.

NFL news: Steelers insisting Big Ben’s foot isn’t broken; Andre Johnson having MRI on ankle

After watching Ben Roethlisberger hobble around the field last Sunday, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that the Steelers quarterback has a broken foot. He has worn a protective boot on his foot all week. However, the Steelers insist that claim is inaccurate. They say Big Ben is simply healing from an aggravation of an old injury that created scar tissue.

I suppose this information matters more to fantasy owners, as the Texans are almost out of the playoff hunt, but Andre Johnson will have an MRI on his injured ankle today. He caught six passes for 149 yards against Philadelphia last night but required a needle to numb the pain in his ankle.

NBA news: Phil Jackson says Rockets’ two titles are tainted

We’ll assume you caught LeBron James and the Miami Heat tearing apart Cleveland last night, so let’s move on to some other news.

Phil Jackson just won’t stop flapping his gums. His latest inflammatory comment? He claimed that the Houston Rockets 1994 and 1995 NBA championships are tainted because the Bulls didn’t have Michael Jordan for those two years. “Clearly, if the Bulls were whole, we would have won,” he said. “It’s pretty much registered by now. When Michael played, we won the championship.” The Zen Master does have a point. The Bulls won the title in all six of Jordan’s final full seasons with Chicago (disregarding his half season in 1995).
