Today’s Sports News
NFL news: Brett Favre fined $50,000; Fox’s Carlson claims Vick should be “executed”; David Garrard out with finger surgery
Finally, the NFL has ruled on the Brett Favre “sexting” scandal. Jenn Sterger, the alleged victim, likely isn’t happy with the decision: fining Favre $50,000. The league claims that it did not find ample evidence that Favre sent lewd photos to Sterger and thus couldn’t conclude that he violated the league’s personal conduct policy. However, commissioner Roger Goodell determined that Favre “was not candid in several respects during the investigation resulting in a longer review and additional negative public attention for Favre, Steger and the NFL.” He thus fined Favre.
Good ole Fox News. Always good for fair and balanced information. Always good to remind us that Michael Vick deserves to be executed. Wait – what? Fox commentator Tucker Carlson claimed this week that the Eagles’ quarterback deserved to die for his crimes against dogs. The comment came in response to U.S. President Obama stating that people who have paid for their crimes should have the chance to contribute to society again.
David Garrard likely won’t contribute to Jacksonville’s playoff run if the Jags can sneak in. Their starting quarterback will miss Week 17 and beyond with finger surgery.
NBA news: Kevin Garnett suffers leg injury
It was only a matter of time before the Celtics’ age caught up to them as it did last year and the year before. Kevin Garnett left Boston’s loss to Detroit last night with a leg injury after a dunk. He’ll undergo an MRI today to learn more about the injury and is considered day-to-day for now.
UFC news: Cain Velasquez tears rotator cuff; Chuck Liddell retires
A couple of huge stories in the UFC today. First off – the heavyweight champion of the world’s first title defense will have to wait a long time. Undefeated Cain Velasquez reportedly tore his rotator cuff in training this week. He’s expected to miss six to eight months with the injury. No. 1 contender Junior Dos Santos reportedly doesn’t want to wait that long for his next bout; no word yet on (a) whether he’ll fight someone in the meantime or (b ) whether it will be for an interim heavyweight title.
The Iceman’s time to ride off into the sunset has cometh. UFC Hall-of-Famer Chuck Liddell has officially retired. After a storied career that included four straight light heavyweight title defenses, Liddell lost four of his final five fights, all via knockout. He leaves with a 21-8 record at age 41. Liddell has accepted a position as Vice-President of Business Development.
NHL news: Sidney Crosby’s point streak snapped at 25 games
As we often see with the Joe DiMaggio hit streak in baseball, media often get too excited when hitters aren’t even halfway to 56-game streaks. The same could be said for the NHL. Sidney Crosby’s 25-game point streak was a remarkable accomplishment in the modern era; he tallied 26 goals and 50 points over that span. It was the longest since Mats Sundin’s 30-game streak in 1992-93. In the end, however, it wasn’t even close to the Great One. Wayne Gretzky’s record 51-point streak remains just as safe as DiMaggio’s record.
