NHL news: Chris Pronger breaks foot, out at least a month; Coyotes call up university student as backup goalie

Chris Pronger will miss some time for the Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers have been a powerhouse this season but their defensive pillar, Chris Pronger, is out four to six weeks. He broke his foot Wednesday against the Montreal Canadiens and will have surgery today to repair the bone.

What happens when your starting goalie is sick and you don’t have a third netminder ready to go? Well, you find the nearest graduate student, naturally. The Phoenix Coyotes did just that last night. In a major pinch, they tracked down Tom Fenton, a goalie coach from Manhattanville College. He didn’t play in last night’s game but was “sweating” when Jason LaBarbera appeared to tweak his groin.

NFL news: Redskins bench Donovan McNabb for Rex Grossman; Tim Tebow to get first start?

Mike Shanahan hinted at it…but he was bluffing, wasn’t he? Turns out he wasn’t. Shanahan and the Washington Redskins have officially benched Donovan McNabb for Sunday’s game against Dallas. They hand the starting reins to Rex Grossman, whose career passer rating is 69.6.

With the Denver Broncos’ playoff hopes long over, is it time for Tim Tebow to get his first NFL start at quarterback? Kyle Orton is battling bruised ribs and hasn’t been playing well of late; whispers around Denver are that Tebow could get the nod Sunday against Oakland.

Dallas Cowboys linebacker Anthony Spencer is the latest to join the fine parade. The NFL docked him $12,500 yesterday for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Michael Vick last Sunday.

MLB news: Athletics acquire Josh Willingham; Kerry Wood back to Cubs; Bobby Jenks to Boston

A slew of mid-range moves went down in Major League Baseball over the last 24 hours. First off, Oakland acquired outfielder Josh Willingham from the Washington Nationals for prospects. Willingham battled .268 with 16 homers in 114 games last year and has three 20-homer seasons to his name.

Several relievers changed teams yesterday. Kerry Wood left the Yankees to return to the Chicago Cubs on a one-year deal; Bobby Jenks signed a two-year pact with the Boston Red Sox; Jesse Crain and Matt Guerrier left the Twins to sign three-year deals with the White Sox and Dodgers, respectively.

The Detroit Tigers retained Magglio Ordonez’s services for one year and $10 million. He hit .303 with 12 homers and 59 RBI in just 84 games last year. Also, former ace Rich Harden returned to the Athletics on a one-year deal.
