NBA news: Joakim Noah out eight-plus weeks

Yankees plan to target Carlos Zambrano?

The Chicago Bulls can’t catch a break and can’t afford to lose anyone with the Celtics, Heat and Knicks playing so well. They opened the year with Carlos Boozer on the shelf; now, they’ll have to soldier on without Joakim Noah. The big man had surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb and will need at least eight weeks to recover.

Noah is a huge loss for the Bulls; the 2007 first-round pick averages 14.0 points and 11.7 rebounds this season.

MLB news: Bob Feller dead at 92; Yankees roll dice on Mark Prior, plan to target Carlos Zambrano?

Baseball lost one of it legends last night. At 9:15 p.m., longtime Cleveland Indians pitcher and Hall-of-Famer Bob Feller passed away from acute leukemia.

Feller, part of the Indians’ rotation the last time they Won the World Series in 1946, won 266 games in 18 seasons with Cleveland. He led the American League in strikeouts seven times, threw three no-hitters and threw 12 one-hitters. He struck out 15 batters in his MLB debut in 1936 at age 17.

One pitcher many people thought was on track for a Hall of Fame career before flaming out was Mark Prior. He’s been out of Major League Baseball since 2006 but is trying to make a comeback. The New York Yankees decided to give him a chance, signing the big righty to a minor-league contract. Prior pitched most of last season with an independent minor league club.

The Yankees are also looking at Prior’s former teammate, Carlos Zambrano, as a potential trade option. Could the emotional Big Z survive in the Bronx? He’d be a risky add, though the Yankees do have his old pitching coach, Larry Rothschild.

NFL news: Giants’ Steve Smith out for season; Shanahan to bench Donovan McNabb?

The Panthers’ Steve Smith is already on milk cartons; now, the New York Giants’ Steve Smith is about to join him. The Giants have shut him down for the season after he injured his hamstring and his ACL. He’ll require surgery a long rehabilitation process that could last into training camp.

Could Mike Shanahan bench Donovan McNabb for Rex Grossman this week? We can’t put it past Shanny. He claims he’s not committing to reveal his choice for Sunday’s Washington Redskins starting quarterback yet, as he wants to confuse the Dallas Cowboys and force them to game plan for both players.

NCAA football news: Michael Haywood to succeed Dave Wannstedt at Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Panthers are expected to name Michael Haywood as Dave Wannstedt’s successor for their head coaching job today at a press conference. Haywood, a former Notre Dame offensive co-ordinator, coached Miami Ohio for two seasons, He was 1-11 in his first year with the team but turned them into a 9-4 school this year and led them to a 26-21 win over Northern Illinois in the MAC title game.
