MLB news: Cliff Lee signs with Phillies; Royals sign Jeff Francoeur; Jose Canseco planning comeback?

Please Jose Stay Away! Far far Away!

Wow. On a day when Brett Favre’s career may have ended, another story stole his thunder. Cliff Lee shocked Major League Baseball by spurning both the Yankees and Rangers to return to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Lee took less money  — a five-year, $100-million deal – to join what now becomes the most ridiculously talented rotation in baseball. The Phillies’ top four: Roy Halladay, Lee, Roy Oswalt, Cole Hamels. Their No. 4 starter is a World Series MVP.

Jeff Francoeur became the Royals’ annual free-swinging veteran signing yesterday. He inked a one-year, $2.5-million deal that will actually pay him less than the league average. Last year, he batted .249 with 13 homers and 65 RBI in 139 games.

Is Jose Canseco attempting a comeback? I suppose that shouldn’t surprise us. After all, this is the same man who fought a 7’2” monster in mixed martial arts, boxed a 60-year-old (and lost) and joined a beer-league softball team. Well, the 46-year old went on a Twitter rampage on the weekend, declaring that he wants to return to the majors. Among his tweets:

“I can dh for any major league team and lead the league in home runs just give me the chance”’; “I was laughed at when I said I would do the 40^40”’ and “I dream about playing almost every night when I wake up and realize I am not anymore that’s when the nightmare begins.” Can someone sign him? Just for the sideshow? Please?

NFL news: Brett Favre’s iron man streak ends; Jets assistant coach fined, suspended; Bucs linebacker Hayes arrested

It’s all over. Brett Favre’s shoulder injury kept him out of Minnesota’s game against the New York Giants last night, ending his consecutive starts streak and 297 (and 321 including playoff games). The pinched nerve is numbing the feeling in his fingers; he’ll be re-evaluated today and could be shut down for the season – and forever – as a result. We’ll see.

Finally, a fine for someone not named James Harrison – but it’s not a player who got it. New York Jets strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi has been fined $25,000 and suspended without pay by the team for the rest of the 2010 season. The reason: he tripped a Miami Dolphins player during Sunday’s loss. He stuck out his left knee to take out Dolphins cornerback Nolan Carroll during punt return coverage. Dumb.

The few Buccaneers defensive players who aren’t injured are still getting themselves into trouble. On Monday, Bucs linebacker Geno Hayes was arrested and jailed for disorderly conduct and trespassing after an altercation at a nightclub. He was intervening in another dispute that led to two other men being asked to leave the entrance to the Blue Martini Lounge. He was ejected after ignoring a request to go to the back of the club and began “making derogatory statements and menacingly staring” at police and security personnel.  Hayes, who will still play this week according to Raheem Morris, is the third Tampa player arrested in the last two months.
