Sports News – NBA news: Kevin Love to win Most Improved; Oliver Miller arrested; Brandon Roy “hurt” by benching

NBA news: Kevin Love to win Most Improved

Not surprisingly, Kevin Love is on the verge of being named the NBA’s Most Improved Player for 2010-11. Last season, the Timberwolves forward averaged 14 points and 11 rebounds. This year, he exploded to 20.2 points and a league-leading 15.2 rebounds per game.

Former NBA player Oliver Miller, now 41 years old, has been arrested and charged with assault. The nine-year league veteran is accused of pistol-whipping a man during a cookout at his Maryland home Sunday.

What’s happened to Brandon Roy? The three-time All-Star’s knees have left him a shadow of his former self this season. In Portland’s Game-1 loss to Dallas, he scored two points on 1 of 7 shooting in 26 minutes. In Game 2 on Tuesday, he played just eight minutes, scoring no points, and wound up benched. He said “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little hurt” and that he fought back tears.

MLB news: Logan Morrison, Aaron Hill have MRIs; Percentage of black players drops

Florida Marlins blue-chipper Logan Morrison was off to a sizzling start in 2011, riding a 10-game hitting streak and batting .327 with four homers. But it looks like he’ll be on the shelf for the foreseeable future. Morrison injured his left foot leaving the batter’s box during a groundout on Tuesday. He’s awaiting the result of his MRI.

Toronto Blue Jays second baseman Aaron Hill has been sent for an MRI of his own. He’s day-to-day with hamstring tightness – probably because he’s already equalled his single-season career high in stolen bases with six through just 16 games.

The percentage of black players in Major League Baseball is on the decline once again. On Opening Day 2011, just 8.5 per cent of the league was comprised of black players – the lowest number since 2007. Interestingly, the sport overall still receives a top grade for racial diversity, largely because of its Latino presence.

NHL news: Jeff Carter injures knee

During Buffalo’s series-tying, 1-0 win over Philadelphia last night, Flyers forward Jeff Carter collided knee-on-knee with Sabres defender Tyler Myers. Myers appeared to take the worst of it but returned to the game. Carter seemed fine at first but, in the end, he’s in worse shape. He left the game. It’s being called a “lower-body injury” for now.

NFL news: Mallett’s agent denies “partying” rumors

Wow – it seems no one wants to play for the Carolina Panthers next year. Elite quarterback prospect Ryan Mallett of Arkansas skipped his official visit with the Panthers yesterday after he was rumored to be out late the previous night partying.

J.R. Carroll, one of Mallett’s agents, insisted that Mallett wasn’t partying. Carroll was “pretty sure Ryan was really, really sick. He told me he was sick the night before. And I know Ryan wasn’t out late [that] night. I know that for sure. He’s not an idiot.”

NCAA basketball news: The Kentucky trio declares for the NBA draft

Ouch. Kentucky suffered a blow last season when John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins and Eric Bledsoe entered the NBA draft. After the freshmen like Brandon Knight, Terrence Jones and DeAndre Liggins arrived this past season, however, everything looked good for the Wildcats.

Maybe not. All three have declared for the 2011 NBA draft after just one season.
