After finishing undefeated atop Group A, Uruguay will prepare to battle a resilient South Korean side in first match of the last 16 of the World Cup on Saturday.

Uruguay advanced on a pair of wins and a draw, while South Korea are the first Asian team to reach the knockout stage of the World Cup twice, having one win, a loss and a draw.

Uruguay are unbeaten against South Korea, winning four and drawing one of their previous five meetings, including a 1-0 World Cup group stage victory in 1990.Bet on Soccer at Sportsbook.com

Although not originally thought of as one of the group favorites (FIFA Ranking: 19, Odds to win: +10000), they have been in excellent form so far.

And with the deadly striking duo of Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez — who has scored 53 goals in 60 appearances for club and country this season — the South Korea defense will have to be at their very best to advance to the quarterfinals. La Celeste are unbeaten in their last five World Cup games, as goalkeeper Fernando Muslera is yet to concede a goal keeping four clean sheets in the process.

Coach Oscar Tabarez will have a full squad to choose from, although Jorge Fucile is on a yellow card and will have to be careful not to pick up a booking, because he won’t want to miss the quarterfinal should Uruguay progress.

By the odds, (FIFA Ranking: 52, Odds to win: +20000), the Taeguk Warriors have shocked the football world by advancing out of what was considered to be a tough Group B, beating out Greece and Nigeria by one and two points respectively — with four points scoring five goals.

South Korea have never beaten a South American opponent at the World Cup finals, having lost three and drawn one of these four encounters, netting just two goals.

They will now get the opportunity to change that but will need more offensive punch up front as only two of South Korea’s last 10 World Cup goals have come from its strikers.

Uruguay possesses pace, power, technique, flair, and discipline, but have are a side that has only really been tested by Mexico, beating them 1-0. They’ve got a strong midfield and potent goal-scoring strikers.

Quite the opposite, South Korea have very little of the above. However, they are a side that play together as a team very well, and are capable of putting together some surprising results.

Case in point, Argentina, where they almost scored at 1-2 but came up short against the South American juggernaut.

They also showed their fortitude against Nigeria, and displayed their offensive abilities against Greece.

Unfortunatly for the Taeguk Warriors, Uruguay will be better than Argentina at the back, and just as effective going forward. I expect a great match with Uruguay coming out on top.

Thanks for the post. So now that it’s down to only a few teams, who do you think is going to come out on top?

CT-

Thanks for stopping by. All this WC soccer is a cracker for sure. My bets on the Braziilans, but first they will have to navigate their way past an awesome Dutch side.

One of the best matches this weekend will br Argentina and Germany. Both of these teams can score. Wouldn’t surprise me if it eneded in a 4-3 outcome either way.

Ghana showed a lot of heart and plenty of speed agaist the Yanks, but I am not sure if they can beat the likes of Holland or Brazil, even if they are to get by Uruguay.

Spain shoud win their quarterfinal agasint Paraguay, but could falter to the likes of Argentina should they beat Germany.

Lots of good football on tap.
