Despite suffering two defeats in their opening two games, Nigeria’s chance of a knockout round appearance is still alive providing they pull of a win over South Korea and have Greece lose to Argentina by a wide margin.

Meanwhile, South Korea is still reeling from their pounding at the hands of an Argentina.

Despite the heavy loss, the Taeguk Warriors are in a good position to go through, as they need only a draw and an Argentina win over Greece to move on.

Nigeria fell 2-1 as Greece claimed their first World Cup win on Thursday when Vassilis Torosidis poked home a loose ball in the 71st minute after a mistake from Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama.

The Nigerians, who have a reputation for offense, haven’t threatened much throughout this tournament, but opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Kalu Uche’s free kick from 35 yards slipped by goalkeeper Alexandros Tzorvas.

But the game changed in the 33rd minute when Nigerian midfielder Sani Kaita was red carded for kicking Torosidis in the thigh, an event that prompted death threats after the incident. Greece pressed and took advantage a minute before halftime when Salpingidis’ shot deflected off the unlucky Lukman Haruna and into his own net.

Nigeria seemed to let its frustrations show and rather than step up under pressure, they played sloppy and lost the match.

The Koreans are in their seventh consecutive World Cup, but only advanced when they co-hosted the tournament in 2002 and reached the semifinals.

This year was shaping up to appear as promising when the Koreans shot out Greece 2-0 in their opener, but followed with resounding 4-1 loss from Argentina on Thursday.

Korea surrendered 11 shots on goal and took just two, giving up control of most of the match. The Argentines took the lead in the 17th minute when Park Chu-young deflected in a free kick from Messi.

Higuain made it 2-0 in the 33rd after Nicolas Burdisso passed along a cross from Maxi Rodriguez. Lee Chung-yong took a defensive mistake to close the gap, but Higuain’s two second-half goals put a win out of reach.

Nigeria has failed to win in their last seven appearances in the World Cup. Their last success was a 1-0 win over Bulgaria in June 1998.

The Koreans showed some guts against Argentina and should prove too strong for a Nigerian side that appears to be in poor form.
