The tourney started with the Netherlands among the favorites to win the World Cup, and Japan, along with all of the other Asian teams, on the outside.

But that may have changed a bit as the Samurai Blue recorded its first FIFA World Cup win on foreign soil, downing Cameroon 1-0 and joining the Netherlands on three points at the top of Group E.

With Cameroon’s second match against Denmark, the day’s other losers, this match assumes do-or-die dimensions for both sides.

The Dutch, who twice reached the final but lost both times, opened their World Cup campaign Monday with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Denmark.

Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk sprung a pre-match surprise with the inclusion of Arjen Robben as a substitute, and from the looks of the early stages of the match, the Oranje could certainly have done with the winger’s pace and trickery.

For more good news, it was announced that Robben may train with the rest of the squad on Wednesday but he didn’t know whether the winger would be fully fit by the time Netherlands faces Japan.

Robben injured his hamstring against Hungary about a week before the start of the World Cup and has been sidelined ever since. Star striker Van Persie put on a dazzling performance despite recovering from a nagging ankle injury, and played most of the game against Denmark before being substituted late in match.

It was his cross that led to the goal that broke the deadlock a minute into the second half. Things seem to be falling in place for the Netherlands, and it’s the perfect time for them to get healthy against a very physical Japanese side.

Coming off four straight exhibition losses in the buildup to the tournament, the Japanese earned their first World Cup victory on Monday when Keisuke Honda scored in the first half for a 1-0 victory over a lackluster Cameroon squad.

After a sloppy first 30 minutes, Japan broke the stalemate when Daisuke Matsui drifted a great cross over the heads of Cameroon defenders Nicolas Nkoulou and Stephane Mbia. The ball fell to Keisuke Honda at the far post and the striker took advantage and sent it past goalkeeper Hamidou Souleymanou.

Despite an attack led by Samuel Eto, Cameroon never really challenged Japan keeper Eiji Kawashima.

The Africans struggled to possess the ball and generate any rhythm up front.

Holland may have more trouble here than initially expected, but should ultimately prevail victorious.

At first glance I thought this could be a high scoring game for the Dutch, but after Japan’s persistent defense in game one, I am going for a 2-0 win for Holland.

However, it is possible they could tack as many as three with some of the goal scorers they can field. (3-1)
