Australia will be looking to redeem themselves after losing 4-0 in their last outing against three-time world champions Germany, as they kick off against Ghana in the fourth match of a tricky Group D.

Despite key injuries the Black Stars managed to climb to the to the top of the group in a tie with the Germans, after an emotional 1-0 win over favored Serbia in game one of group action.

The Socceroos have failed to impress while Ghana, who have the advantage of the climate and local support in Africa, seem to be gaining momentum.

The Australians now face a do-or-die situation as anything less than three points against the sole African winners so far at the 2010 FIFA World Cup will end their hopes of qualifying for the second round.
Odds: Ghana -129 / Australia +300 / Draw +250

Asamoah Gyan scored an 85th-minute penalty Sunday to help Ghana to a 1-0 victory over Serbia and the first win by an African team at this World Cup.

Gyan sent the spot kick high into the net for the only goal. The Black Stars had missed a series of headed chances and earned the penalty when Zdravko Kuzmanovic handled a cross in the area.

Ghana won despite the absence of the nation’s best player Michael Essien who was ruled out of the World Cup with a knee problem. John Mensah and Gyan missed the target earlier, and Dede Ayew header carromed off the post.

Serbia’s only real threat near the end was a shot by Milos Krasic that was saved by goalkeeper Richard Kingson, who turned in a solid performance in goal.

After conceding two goal in the first half, the Australians would surrender two more allowing Germany to deliver the final blow.

Trailing by two, the Socceroos real self destruction began early in the second half when Lucas Neill’s knee into the back of striker Klose, was combined with a red card for Australia’s Tim Cahill in the 56th minute for a reckless challenge on Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Any slim hope Australia had of coming back evaporated with Cahill’s sending off, as the German juggernaut went into overdrive with a man advantage. Australia now has a mountain to climb if it is to progress to the next round, especially as it will be without Cahill. The Australian’s did have a few shinning moments, briefly threatening at the start of each half.

Cahill had a header blocked in the fourth minute and Richard Garcia’s follow-up shot also was stopped on the German line.

While they were completely dominated by Germany, look for a better showing against Ghana, though they shouldn’t expect an easy win either.

This match could be intense, and while Ghana should have a very slight edge here Australia will be fighting to get through this tough group, which also contains Serbia and Germany.

I think there is a strong chance this will end in a 1-1 draw.
