The World Cup, arguably sports’ biggest event, is just weeks away from taking South Africa by storm. Who has the best shot to emerge from each group?

Group B of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa looks to be an exciting one featuring a few teams with major momentum entering the tournament.

Argentina looks like one of the top favorites; having the unbelievably talented Lionel Messi makes them oh-so dangerous. And what about the Greeks, who won Euro 2004 and may not be afterthoughts anymore?

Let’s break down all of Group B.

ARGENTINA (+675 to win World Cup)

It was a bumpy road, but Argentina qualified and now looks like a major force to be reckoned with at the World Cup. They battled plenty of inconsistency, largely because manager Diego Maradona rotated so many different players through the lineup, but they scraped by South American qualifying in fourth place. Now, they’ll rely on Juan Sebastian Veron to control the offensive flow from midfield.

And, of course, the team will live and die with amazing Messi, who may be the best player on the planet today.

GREECE (+15000 to win World Cup)

The Greeks are in a familiar position in that their backs are to the wall but an unfamiliar one in that this is just their second appearance in the World Cup. They won’t fill the net but they play sturdy defense and have a good leader in captain Giorgos Karagounis.

NIGERIA (+12500 to win World Cup)

There’s no one way to build a team and Nigeria has chosen to do so from the back end out. Its goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama, is considered by most to be one of the best in the world – and at least the best on his continent.

He’ll hope for some offensive support up front from Obafemi Martins and Chinedu Obasi while Chelsea’s Jon Obi Mikel will be the stabilizing presence in the middle.

SOUTH KOREA (+25000 to win World Cup)

What can we expect from South Korea, which shocked the world by reaching the semifinal in 2002 as the host nation?

On paper, they don’t look like much, but they were the only Asian nation to go undefeated in qualifying and their victory over Ivory Coast really stands out. Will their organized, controlled style generate enough offense to get them past round one?

THE PICKS

I don’t think there’s any way Argentina doesn’t at least crack the top two in this group. Messi is a monster and he’ll get some nice support from finishing specialist Gonzala Higuain.

The second spot is up for grabs but I think Nigeria will take it. It has a great keeper but also has a few legitimate scoring options. I’m not convinced Greece or South Korea does.

Prediction: Argentina and Nigeria
