Many eyes will be fixated on the marquee match up of week three in the EPL when Tottenham Hotspur put their undefeated record on the line and search for their best start to a campaign in five years against Liverpool on Sunday.

With two matches in the books the Spurs sit atop the table with a 2-0-0 record which they share with Chelsea, Swansea City and last year’s title winners Manchester City. Tottenham holds the tie break among the four thanks to a goal differential of five. Tottenham will be in tough this week however, as Liverpool will welcome their new striker Mario Balotelli back to the EPL after having spent the past season and a half with Milan in Italy’s Serie A.

The Reds have beaten Spurs in their last three meetings but will have to contend with a hot squad and their home crowd this weekend.

Let’s take a quick look at how each team made out last week.

Tottenham:

Spurs showed off a lot of flash and offensive prowess last week, handing out a 4-0 drubbing to Queens Park Rangers at White Hart Lane.

The motivation of seeing former manager Harry Redknapp on the visitors’ sideline must have lit a fire under the team from North London as they put together a total team effort to decimate the newly promoted club.

Unlike many clubs that tend to reside atop the premiership, Spurs lack that one stand out player who can take over a game on his own. They instead employ a total team game as is evidenced by three different players finding the net on their five goals thus far (Nacer Chadli – 2, Eric Dier – 2, Emmanuel Adebayor – 1).

Defensively this club has been sound on both home and enemy soil and French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris sports an unblemished record without allowing a goal. Lloris wasn’t really tested last week however, as Spurs held a 64% – 36% edge in possession and QPR managed just one shot on target.

You can be sure he will be seeing a much higher volume of shots this week as Liverpool won’t be quite as apt to let Spurs dictate ball possession the way the Rangers did last week.

Liverpool:

The Reds backed up their opening week victory over Southampton at Anfield with a pretty one-sided loss to last year’s champs from Manchester City at the Etihad last week.

While the 3-1 scoreline may not look  too terrible, as City have a knack for running teams out of the Etihad in embarrassing fashion (see: 6-0 over Tottenham and 7-0 over Norwich last season), Liverpool were out of the game by the 55th minute when Stefan Jovetic potted his second goal of the match. A 69th minute goal from Sergio Aguero made it 3-0 and that was all she wrote.

The Reds’ only goal came on an own goal by City defender Pablo Zabaleta in the 83rd minute when the game was already long over.

This is a side that could be very Jekyl and Hyde for most of the season; I will fess up that I thought that would be the case last year and as it turned out they kept a pretty even keel and in all rights should have won the league if not for a late season collapse.

Replacing striker Luis Saurez looked to be a near impossible task, and while they sport different skill sets, Italian striker Mario Balotelli will add an immediate punch up front for this team.

Daniel Sturridge worked very well as a compliment to Suarez last season and if he can find the same chemistry with Super Mario, this team will always be a scoring threat up front.

EPL WEEK 3 Tottenham vs Liverpool Free Pick

Many odds makers have this game as a pick’em and you could almost flip a coin to decide who to go with, but I’m going to ride the home team in this one and say Liverpool pulls out the victory to continue their recent stranglehold on Spurs and extend their win streak over Totteham to five straight games.

Spurs are coming off a laugher against a weak QPR side, Liverpool are anxious for redemption after a sound beating last week.

Pick: Liverpool (+164)
