Aston Villa has been decimated by a rash of injuries, and is likely to have eight first-team squad members unavailable for its clash with Manchester United on Saturday morning.

Habib Beye and Carlos Cuellar are the latest victims that will be added to a long list that includes Fabian Delph, Stilian Petrov, Nigel Reo-Coker, and Steve Sidwell.

One upside is the possibility of striker Gabriel Agbonlahor returning to the starting line-up after making his comeback from groin surgery as a substitute against Blackpool. Agbonlahor has netted four of the six goals the Villans have scored against United in the teams’ last 10 meetings.

As a result of the barrage of injuries, the Villa has had a rough season so far, with their weekend victory over Blackpool being their first league win since September. Grabbing a much-needed three points, Villa elevated to 10th on the table with only a goal difference keeping them from grabbing a Europa League spot from the sixth-placed Bolton Wanderers.

The visiting Red Devils are in just as bad shape, with Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen being absent to bolster the Man U attack. To add to the list of players sidelined, Paul Scholes is suspended due to an accumulation of yellow cards.

They will however have the presence of Dimitar Berbatov, coupled with the emergence of Javier Hernandez and Bebe, as well as the possible return of Ryan Giggs who is finally shaking off his hamstring woes.

Despite the side’s setbacks, United gained ground on league leaders Chelsea with the victory over Wolverhampton last weekend, but then missed their chance to further narrow the gap with a nil-nil  draw in the midweek derby game against Manchester City.

Currently tied with Arsenal and with Chelsea’s predicted victory over No. 8 Sunderland at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, a Red Devils win would ensure they preserve their position at the top of the league table.

United are the only team who currently boast an unbeaten record in all competitions. However, their form away from Old Trafford has been short of stellar, as their six games have resulted in five draws and a single victory.

The Devils woes seem to be the side’s ability to hang onto a lead as demonstrated in their recent lost to Everton on two late goals.

This all bodes well for a banged up Aston Villa side that has not lost at home this season and has buried 69 percent of its goals in the first 45 minutes of play. They have recorded three wins and three draws in six matches at Villa Park, but have only registered to draws –in their most recent two – out of 14 Premier League matches against United on their home pitch.

Villa keeper Brad Friedel has posted four clean sheets in his last six home Premier League matches. If the 39-year old net minder can keep the Villans within striking distance, they could pull off the upset. This will be extremely important on set pieces, as United have scored a joint-high five goals from corners in the Premier League this season.
