This will be the 175th meeting between these two bitter rivals who after the inclement weather conditions of last weekend have had a rare two-week rest between fixtures to prepare for this holiday encounter.

Both sides are desperate for a win as they attempt to stay within striking distance of top table Manchester United who remain clear by two points with a game in hand.

The Blues hold a commanding lead in the all time series having just two losses in their last 18 matches against Arsenal in all competitions, and have won the last five meetings. They have netted 11 goals in their last four league games against the Gunners, conceding only once.

However, Chelsea are coming into the match on their worst ever run of form in the Premier League, gaining half as many points as Arsenal in the last six games with just a single victory in their last seven outings.

Meanwhile, the Gunners have lost just three times at home so far this season, winning four and drawing a pair. All but two of Arsenal’s eight home fixtures this season have delivered three goals or more with the Gunners failing to score at the Emirates just once against Newcastle.

That should bode well of Arsenal who face a Chelsea side that failed to score as of late and have kept just two clean sheets at Manchester City, Aston Villa, Liverpool and Birmingham.

Abou Diaby returns to the Arsenal squad after a lengthy layoff, as well as captain Cesc Fabregas and goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, meaning the Gunners are nearly full strength with the exception of long-term absentees Thomas Vermaelen, Manuel Almunia and Kieran Gibbs.

As for the Blues, they are also nearing full strength and will welcome back Frank Lampard who will make his first start in four months. Michael Essien, John Terry, keeper Petr Cech and the returning golden boot of Didier Drogba complete a formidable backbone for the reigning champions.

The Ivorian Drogba has had his way with the Gunner’s back four, registering 13 goals in his last 11 league and cup appearances against them. The question remains whether the fiery striker will be at top form following a bout with malaria that has resulted in some recent poor performances including a late missed penalty against Tottenham.

The Gunners will try to hit Chelsea with their slick passing game, while the Blues attempt to outmuscle their opposition hitting them with devastating counter-attacks.

The last two encounters in North London have seen eight goals and based on present form, it’s hard to see both sides keeping a clean sheet here.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Arsenal 3, Chelsea 2
