English Premier League’s table toppers Manchester United will host FC Schalke 04 at Old Trafford in the UEFA Champions League Semifinal second leg on Wednesday, looking to cement their place in this year’s Final at Wembley against familiar foe Barcelona.

However, the Red Devils should not lose focus against their German opponents despite entering into the mid week match up with not only a 2-0 lead on aggregate but the away goals advantage as well.

FC Schalke has played commendably to this point, and a team that has nothing to lose or prove is often the most dangerous. Not to mention the fact that this same side ripped off five goals at FC Internazionale Milano in the last round. That is reason alone for United to remain on their guard, as going to Inter and scoring five is no small feat.

However, history suggests United can look forward to Wednesday’s match with confidence as the Old Trafford side have won all 14 UEFA competition ties which they began with an away victory, while only twice in the UEFA Champions League era has a side overcome a home loss in the first leg.

United simply outmatched their counterpart in the first leg at Veltins-Arena, as the German side found it difficult to maintain possession of the ball, and on the odd occasion that they did have the ball, they allowed to much space for the Red Devils to operate and inflict damage.

Coach Ralf Rangnick’s squad played miserably, and if it weren’t for the brilliant play of goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, the score line could have been much worse.

Meanwhile, United come into this match with just 90 minutes separating them from their fifth European Cup/Champions League Final. It was experience that got the job done for the Red Devils as Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney both netted goals in leg one, as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side picked up its first victory on German soil in the in Champions League play.

Now the Devils have the opportunity of resting a few key players, and that might be the case as United failed to wrap up the EPL title last week and have a key match against Chelsea this weekend.

This is the first time that FC Schalke 04 will visit Old Trafford. They will need everyone to step up if they want to pull of the “Miracle in Manchester.”

While I think Man U might rest some of their regulars, it won’t be to the point for Schalke to spoil United’s date with Barca.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Manchester United 1, Schalke 1

One reply on “FC Schalke 04 vs. Manchester United Betting Odds: Champions League Picks”

Considering Ferguson’s decision to rest some regulars for the crucial derby against Chelsea United could settle for a draw which secures their qualification into the Wembley final. Berbatov to score could be a good betting option.
