Uruguay vs England Prediction – June 19

England and Uruguay in Must-Win Heading Into Match 2

England and Uruguay meet in São Paulo Wednesday with both teams looking for their first points of the World Cup. Two former winners of the prestigious crown will have a lot to prove – for England it will be that a spirited effort in a 2-1 loss to Italy was a sign of some positive results on the horizon. For Uruguay, they will be out to prove that a shocking 3-1 loss at the hands of Costa Rica was the exception – not the rule. A berth in the round of 16 is on the line for both teams – it should be a good one!

There is definitely some concern in the Uruguay camp ahead of their match with England – not only did they fall to Costa Rica in their World Cup opener in a game that they thought they would win but Liverpool star Luis Suarez may not be fit to play – and if he does play he will certainly be less than 100%. Suarez didn’t make an appearance in Uruguay’s first game despite his squad allowing three second half goals en route to a stunning loss.

Another concern has to be the defensive effort of Uruguay. Costa Rica’s three goals were no fluke – they were well earned against what looked like an overmatched back line. Uruguay had little answers for Costa Rica’s forwards and is now tasked with the prospect of facing an England squad with a substantial class edge on the Costa Ricans.

If defending was an issue against Costa Rica, so too was an attack that only succeeded on a penalty by Edison Cavani. Uruguay didn’t pose much of a threat – the potential absence of Suarez again isn’t a good sign for Uruguay heading into Match 2.

England, despite the loss on Saturday has to be somewhat satisfied with their effort against Italy. The English have a chance to make some noise Wednesday and put themselves in a terrific position to advance. But England isn’t without their question marks. Wayne Rooney was very disappointing against Italy playing out of position – his World Cup issues are well documented and the pressure on him to snap a 600 minute goal-less streak is monumental.

Danny Welbek, Daniel Sturridge, Raheem Sterling and Rooney were OK but will need to be a tad better if they hope to post victory. The English attack gets a crack at a Uruguay defense that was exposed in a big way against Costa Rica and should find some success.

Defensively, England was OK against Italy but was clearly beaten on Italy’s two goals.

There is far less danger facing them Wednesday – a chance to solidify the back line is within their grasp especially if Luis Suarez doesn’t play.

Betting Prediction:

It’s not a matter of loving England in Wednesday’s game, it is more of a matter of not liking Uruguay – Luis Suarez will certainly be at less than 100% if he plays. England enters Match 2 with some confidence while Uruguay comes into the game with far more questions than answers.

Count of England to make the necessary teaks to their lineup and defeat a Uruguay team that didn’t look good at all Saturday.

Pick: England +115
