After finishing first in the Championship in 2008-2009, Wolverhampton returned to the Premier League for the first time since the 2003-2004 season, and although their 15th finish was the clubs best in the top tier of English football in 30 years, it was far from impressive.

The Wolves struggled offensively, netting just 32 goals—the fewest in the league. They did not score in 17 of their 38 matches despite signing their most expensive transfer in the club’s history in Kevin Doyle. The 26-year old striker was sidelined at the start of last year’s campaign but made his debut at Manchester City on August 22. He didn’t score his first goal for the club until nearly a month later in a 2–1 home win against Fulham, the first of nine goals on the season.

Despite their lack of offensive punch, Wolverhampton avoided relegation with an outstanding defensive effort throughout the season, led by American-born goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann, who earned first-choice considerations from head coach Mike McCarthy after starter Wayne Hennessey conceded four goals over two games.

Hahneman, who was awarded a one-year contract extension for the 2010-11 season, posted eight clean sheets in 25 appearances with a GAA of 1.20. Bet on Soccer at Sportsbook.com

Now this season, the Wolves should be able to get some more goals thanks to some new transfers, including English-born Scottish international striker, Steven Fletcher who was Burnley’s top goal scorer during the 2009–10 campaign with eight regular season goals.

He will get some help from Stephen Hunt an attacking midfielder that scored six goals in 27 appearances for Hull City last season before missing the final portion of the season with a foot injury.

The club also enhanced their already solid defense with the additions of Belgian international footballer Jelle Van Damme, who can play as a central defender or a left back, and Steven Mouyokolo, another Hull City transfer.

With their new additions and returning players like Jody Craddock, Player of the Season Award winner, and winger Matthew Jarvis with his quick mental, pace, and ability to anticipate ball movement, Wolverhampton should improve upon last year’s finish.

McCarthy who has spent the last two seasons rebuilding the Wolves organization has struggled to turn sides around when they are in trouble and has an overall poor record in previous top-flight stints.

It will be mission critical for the 51-year old to lead his side to better form if he wants to avoid being sacked in the upcoming season.

Wolverhampton Wolves 2010 Prediction: With their stout defense, and their new offensive acquisitions, I think Wolverhampton should once again avoid relegation in the Premier League this season with a good possibility of finishing in the top half.
