After spending 16 seasons in the Premier League, Newcastle United battled their way back into the top-flight just one year after being relegated by running away with a first place finish gaining 102 points in the Championship 11 points clear of runners-up West Bromwich Albion, and earning themselves an automatic promotion.

One of the key reasons why the Magpies were downgraded two years ago was their inability to win games away from St. James Park. They did however reverse that trend last season, but will need to do better than the 12 points gained away in their 2008-2009 Barclay’s Premiere campaign.

Now the Toon will look to sustain the momentum of their English Championship season that saw them lose just four matches, combining for 90 goals with a +55 goal differential. Bet on Soccer at Sportsbook.com

It won’t be an easy task, but manager Chris Hughton’s squad certainly looks equipped to deal with the demands of Premier League action this go around. And just to make sure, they added some reinforcements with the acquisitions of veteran defender Sol Campbell and talented young midfielder Dan Gosling.

Gosling, who scored a pair of goals in three starts last season with Everton, was ruled out for nine months when he suffered a cruciate ligament injury in March. Providing the 20-year old makes the start of the 2010 EPL season, he will be a welcome addition to the Magpies. Gosling is a versatile player, having operated as a box-to-box midfielder and occasionally pulls duty at right back to accommodate substitutions.

Campbell meanwhile will help strengthen Newcastle’s backline. The veteran defender has considerable pedigree. A former captain of the England team, for whom he made 73 appearances, he also played for Tottenham, Arsenal and Portsmouth, winning two Premier League titles and four FA Cups during his career.

Nottingham Forest defender James Perch will aid him. The 24-year old made more than 200 appearances for Forest and also captained the side on occasion.

All of this new talent should integrate nicely into Houghton’s 4-4-2 formation with returning Magpies like leading scorer Andrew Carroll (17G, 8A), Kevin Nolan (17G, 5A) and Peter Lovenkrands (13G, 2A).

Newcastle United United 2010 Prediction: Newcastle fans will defiantly have something to cheer about after a year spent in the purgatory of English football’s second tier.

With expectations at their highest in several years, the Toon will need to deliver on a solid performances both at and away from St. James Park to avoid the drop zone in 2010.

You can expect a top 15 finish from these blokes this year.
