Despite a late charge during their 2009 English Premiere campaign, Manchester City finished in 5th place just shy of the coveted fourth and final Champions League transfer spot.

After a 4-0 start, the Blues bounced back after an upsetting 4-3 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford to go 10 games unbeaten. Including seven straight draws.

It looked like City may be out headed out of contention for the Champions League until Roberto Mancini took over for exiting manager Mark Hughes. What followed was a mixture of wins, losses and draws that included a 4-2 victory over champions-to-be Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Unfortunately, a major late loss to Tottenham at home ended all hope for the Blues to get into the Champions League.

But Mancini is taking no chances of that happening again, and to ensure he is not sacked before Christmas like his predecessor, he has gone on an elaborate shopping spree snatching up players left and right in an effort that could literally transform City into serious title challengers in 2010-11. Mancini has spent over 80-million pounds on four new players as City’s billionaire Abu Dhabi-based owners continue to write checks in an attempt to buy a Barclay’s Premiere League title.

Signing Yaya Toure from Barcelona, Valencia winger and Spanish international David Silva, Aleksandar Kolarov from Lazio and Hamburg defender Jerome Boateng has got to make a solid statement of the clubs commitment to pull out all of the stops. It is also unlikely that the spree is over with Mancini still entertaining talks with Mario Balotelli and Aston Villa winger James Milner.

The new acquisitions should more than make up for the loss of midfielder Martin Petrov who was a powerful playmaker while accommodating the striking duo of leading scorer Carlos Tevez (23 G, 7A) and Emmanuel Adebayor who scored 14 goals last season, but never really seemed to hit top form.

Mix in an assortment of options off the bench, with Shay Given, Micah Richards, Wayne Bridge, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Roque Santa Cruz, Patrick Vieira, and Vladimir Weiss. And the Blues seem to have the league’s top line up.

Now Mancini’s men will look to build upon last year’s success, avoiding any conflicts of interests, such as those that spilled from the locker room onto the pitch, and just focus on playing 90-minutes of solid unimpeded football.

Manchester City 2010 Prediction: You only have to go as far as Chelsea, Man U, Arsenal and Blackburn to see that big money buys success in the Premier League, and with City’s recent cash bender it would appear that they are well on their way of becoming just the fifth club to earn the distinction of the being the best of English Football.

With players like World Cup winner David Silva, Germany’s Boateng, and a squad oozing with talent, there will be no excuse for Manchester City to fail at securing a Champions League finish as well as making a serious run for the trophy in 2010.
