The Reds caught one bad break after another and with a barrage of injuries and some inconsistent form, finished a sub par 2009 season in 7th spot.

After nearly wining the league in 2008, Liverpool started off last year’s campaign with consecutive losses, and the season never got any better, from being eliminated in the group stage of the Champions League to losing a match to Sunderland thanks to a beach ball that made its way onto the pitch from a Liverpool fan.

Enter new manager Roy Hodgson the maestro behind Fulham’s remarkable run in the Europa League. Hodgson arrives after the woeful end to former boss Rafael Benitez’s reign, and his optimistic attitude should help to energize the overall mood at Anfield.

Mix in the signing of ex-Chelsea winger Joe Cole and Steven Gerrard’s decision to stay on for the 2010-11 season, and the new Liverpool boss will begin to rebuild his troubled club in what is sure to be an intriguing season for the Reds. Bet on Soccer at Sportsbook.com

Cole was by far the biggest acquisition for Liverpool this summer and one that the Anfield faithful have liked. However, is Cole the player who will help the Reds get back into the Champions League? The attacking midfielder has battled injuries and surgery over the past two seasons, and the larger question is will he remain healthy enough to make an impact on this year’s squad?

Another major key to Liverpool’s success will be the health of Gerrard and striker Fernando Torres, both of whom were not up to par last season despite Torres team-leading 18 goals. The effects of “El Nino’s” knee surgery were realized in the South Africa this summer with limited and unproductive results in the 2010 World Cup Finals.

Other incoming players that will help to reinforce the Reds rebuilding process will be 18-year old midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, striker Milan Jovanovic who made his competitive debut for Liverpool against FK Rabotnički in the Europa League, and youthful Rangers center back Danny Wilson.

Among the returning players will be veteran keeper Pepe Reina. The Spanish net minder was a wall between the sticks for Liverpool conceding just 35 goals last season, third best in the Premier League.

Finally, the Reds must improve their away form. The side was just 5-6-8 with a –2 goal differential away from Anfield, a place they went 13-3-3, scoring 43 of their 61 goals.

Liverpool 2010 Prediction: This is a better squad than last year’s and Hodgson will certainly help make Liverpool better. But it still is unknown if the Reds will return to the Champions League after last season.

If they can maintain a healthy squad and improve their play away from home, it’s likely they will place in the top five in 2010.
