Following with a second straight fifth place finish; Everton had high expectations of qualifying for the Champions League in the 2009-2010 season, but instead got off to one their worst starts in recent history.

After being devastated by injuries from nearly day one, the Toffees rebounded with the arrival of Landon Donovan on loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy and finished the season by going unbeaten in their last 11 matches coming up just two points behind Liverpool for the final Europa League spot.

And this season the Toffees will have to do it without Donovan who has been road blocked by MLS commissioner Don Garber who has put a hefty price on America’s darling in order to keep him planted in the states.

Now Toffees boss David Moyes will need to prepare the rest of his highly-capable squad, whose talent was exemplified with victories over Manchester United and Chelsea last season, for a chance at challenging the top four in 2010. Bet on Soccer at Sportsbook.com

The softly spoken Glaswegian will put a lot of confidence into veteran skipper Phil Neville will lead the side. The crafty midfielder knows how to win, and helped Manchester United to six Premier League titles, three FA Cups and the European Cup during his 15 years at Old Trafford. A feat he is yet to reproduce since being at Goodison Park.

Australian midfielder Tim Cahill who captains Everton in Neville’s absence and striker Louis Saha who led the side with 13 goals in last year’s Premiere League campaign will aid him. Challenging Saha for top spot will be new transfer, former Leeds United striker Jermaine Beckford. Moyes has taken a risk on the 26-year old’s ability to replicate his impressive Leeds goal-scoring record of 72.

It will be the group’s responsibility to improve the squad’s offensive punch that ranked just seventh overall in 2009.

Returning between the sticks will be US-born keeper Tim Howard, whose 14 saves in this year’s Word Cup lifted the Stars and Stripes to a quarterfinal finish. He made all 38 starts for Everton in 2009, with 114 saves and 11 clean sheets.

Always important in European competition is getting off to a strong start; something that Everton was not able to do last year. However, with a fully healthy squad and four of their first six fixtures coming against teams that finished out the top 10 in last year’s campaign, it is an opportunity that could propel the Toffees to a great season.

Everton 2010 Prediction: The feeling that Everton have been stuck in a rut for the last two seasons has to create a sense of frustration at Goodison Park.

In all likelihood, Everton should solidify a Europa League spot next season, as well as finishing in the top six of the English Premiere table.
