NFL Week 6 Picks – Houston Texans at Cincinnati Bengals

Houston Texans at Cincinnati Bengals
Sunday, October 18th – Paul Brown Stadium – 1:00 PM ET
NFL Point Spread: Bengals -4.5, O/U: 45

It is pretty clear the Cincinnati Bengals are for real. After losing a heart-breaking game to Denver week one the Bengals have reeled off four straight wins and have beaten every team in their division. What is most impressive about Cincinnati’s winning streak is their ability to make plays in the final seconds each game.

The Houston Texans were impressive coming back from a 21-0 deficit on the road to tie the game in Arizona but with a chance to win the game in the final minutes, Matt Schaub threw an interception for a touchdown. The Texans were then unsuccessful on a 4th and goal and suffered another tough defeat.

NFL Handicapping: What The Texans Have To Do To Win

The Texans have really struggled early in games falling behind by double digits before getting their offense on track. Against the Bengals defense, the Texans cannot afford to fall behind and be forced to become so predictable. [soliloquy id=”82219″]Matt Schaub is having another solid year statistically with 10 touchdown passes and a 97.9 quarterback rating. Houston must get Steve Slaton going to keep the Cincinnati defense guessing.

Houston was able to beat Cincinnati 35-6 last year taking advantage of a Bengals team playing without Carson Palmer. The Texans generally play well in games that they are not supposed to win and this game would certainly fit in to that category.

NFL Handicapping: What The Bengals Have To Do To Win

Cincinnati is starting to look like a complete football team. Their defense is top ten in many categories. Hard to believe but Cedric Benson leads the NFL in rushing yards. Their passing game makes plays when called upon in the final minutes. Hard to believe but the Bengals will need to avoid getting too over confident following three straight divisional wins.

The Bengals should also focus on playing a full 60 minutes. While they have been impressive coming from behind in four straight victories this streak is due to come to an end. Playing with the lead is something that would be in their best interest.

NFL Handicapping: Outlook & Pick

This line seems low. Home teams are generally given a three point edge which means this line indicates that the 4-1 Cincinnati Bengals are only one point better than Houston on a neutral field and that is flat out wrong.

The Bengals are far more impressive than Houston on defense and should finally be able to win a game without needing to score in the final minute. The Texans are in tough playing back-to-back road games after coming up short in the desert.

I think the Bengals will get caught reading their press clippings this week as Houston pulls off the upset. The Texans are a great even week team, so in week 6 they get a win.
