Hokies vs. Bearcats Predictions – 2009 Orange Bowl Betting

Point spread for the 2009 Orange Bowl college football clash between the Virginia Tech Hokies and the Cincinnati Bearcats, plus the betting spreads, and betting trends for ncaa football gambling…

Orange Bowl Sports Betting Virginia Tech vs Cincinnati

This year’s Orange Bowl isn’t what online betting fans had in mind when they figured the Big East would battle the ACC. Online college football betting fans were probably thinking the BC Eagles from the ACC, although Virginia Tech isn’t bad, but Cincinnati from the Big East? Seriously? The Cincinnati Bearcats made it to the Orange Bowl by virtue of their 11 and 2 straight-up record. Among the teams they beat to get there were the West Virginia Mountaineers, ranked in the top twenty to start the season, the South Florida Bulls, Rutgers and Pittsburgh. So, yes, the Bearcats deserve to be in the Orange Bowl. The problem that BetUS online sportsbook betting fans will have with Cincinnati is that even though they are 11 and 2 straight-up, their record against the BetUS online wagering spread is a less than stellar 6 and 6.

The Virginia Tech Hokies lost four games this season. They got lucky to get into the ACC Championship game against Boston College but once they got there they didn’t waste the opportunity. The Hokies are 9 and 4 straight-up and an even worse 5 and 7 against the BetUS online betting spread. But Virginia Tech will have experience on their side. That cannot be discounted in this game.

Here are the BetUS online sportsbook betting odds for this game.

Virginia Tech Hokies + 2 ½ – 110 + 115 O 41 ½ – 110
Cincinnati Bearcats – 2 ½ – 110 – 135 U 41 ½ – 110

Here are a few online wagering trends that might help us find a good online bet in this game.

The Virginia Tech Hokies are 1 and 8 against the spread in their last 9 non-conference games.
The Virginia Tech Hokies are 2 and 5 against the spread in their last 7 bowl games.
The Cincinnati Bearcats are 1 and 5 against the spread in their last 6 bowl games.
The Cincinnati Bearcats are 0 and 4 against the spread in their last 4 bowl games as the favorite.

The Bearcats are favored by virtue of their record but online betting fans aren’t sold on Cincinnati as the against the spread line is only 2 ½ points.

The Virginia Tech Hokies are the second best team that Cincinnati will have faced this season after the Oklahoma Sooners. The Sooners romped all over the ‘Cats beating them 51 to 26. Who else beat Cincinnati this season? How about the Connecticut Huskies who throttled the Bearcats by a score of 40 to 16.

That’s an issue, right? That the Bearcats lost to UConn? I think it is because the Hokies just beat a very good team in the Boston College Eagles. Not only that, but Virginia Tech has one of the more underrated quarterbacks in college football throwing the ball in Tyrod Taylor. Taylor is a very good player. He has that special quality that makes his teammates follow him into hell.

This game could be hell for both teams. They don’t know a lot about each other, but because Virginia Tech is the underdog, and because they have experience in big games, I’m going with the Hokies to pull the upset.

It’s not much of one, the online odds are Virginia Tech + 115 on the BetUS sportsbook money-line, but it’s still an upset.

2009 Orange Bowl Prediction:

I’ll be betting Virginia Tech to win straight-up.
