Jets vs. Dolphins Week 5 MNF Spread

Point spread and prediction for the week 5 NFL clash between the New York Jets and the Miami Dolphins plus the betting spreads, and betting trends for Monday Night football gambling…

AFC East Showdown on Monday Night Football – Jets vs. Dolphins

Game-day: 10/12/2009
Kick-off: 8:30 pm EST

Mark Sanchez was kicked in the mouth this past Sunday when he and the rest of the New York Jets ran into a defensive buzz saw down in the N’Awlins. It wasn’t Drew Brees, Marques Colston and Reggie Bush who lit up the Jets. It was the Saints defense that accounted for 14 points, a returned interception for a TD and a fumble recovery in the end Zone, and caused Sanchez to throw 3 interceptions and fumble the ball once.

Good news, or bad news depending on your point of view, came out of New York this morning when it was announced that the Jets had traded for wide receiver Braylon Edwards. Edwards, who likes to beat up on 130 lb men that hang out with more famous sports stars, is doubtful to see any action this Sunday. Even if he does, he’s had a case of the dropsies lately as Edwards only has 10 catches for 139 yards and hasn’t found the end zone yet.

Of course, Sanchez is a step up from either Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson, the two men in Cleveland who were trying to get Edwards the ball before this morning, but Sanchez is still a rookie. Does he, or rookie head coach Rex Ryan, really need the head case that is Edwards?

Let’s take a look at the odds, trends, and take an in depth look at the game

New York Jets -1 ½ -110 O 36 -110
Miami Dolphins +1 ½ -110 U 36 -110 [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The New York Jets are 20-5-2 ATS in the last 27 meetings between these two teams.
The New York Jets are 4-11-1 ATS in their last 16 games versus a team with a losing record.
The Miami Dolphins are 14-36-1 ATS in their last 51 games at home.

Jets’ Offense vs. Miami’s Defense

Joey Porter, Miami’s terrific defensive pass rusher and a potential future hall of famer, is probable for this game. The Saints showed last week versus Sanchez and the Jets that putting pressure on Mark will lead to mistakes. That’s the usual M.O. when dealing with a rookie QB. So, the question is whether or not a Porter less defense can pressure Sanchez. My feeling is that with Jason Taylor, Akin Aoydele and Channing Crowder, putting pressure on Sanchez should be more than possible.

How will Sanchez react? Better than last week but not great. If the Jets don’t concentrate on their running game, getting Thomas Jones, Leon Washington and Shonn Greene going, and then toss passes out to the running backs in the flat and the tight-end up the middle, then Sanchez and the Jets could be in trouble offensively.

The most points Sanchez and the Jets have put up this year is 24 against both Tennessee and Houston. Versus the Saints they put up only 10 and against the Patriots they put up only 16. Miami could keep the Jets to under 20 on Monday night.

Jets Defense vs. Miami’s Offense

The New York Jets have allowed only 57 points to be scored on them this season. That includes holding the usual good for 30 Houston Texans to 7 points. Miami’s offense did put up 38 points against Buffalo last Sunday but before that they had scored 7 against Atlanta, 23 against Indianapolis and 13 against San Diego.

Chad Henne? Chad Pennington? Does it matter? The Miami offense can’t put points on the board. They’re going to have even more trouble doing so against the Jets as New York’s best defensive player, cornerback Darrelle Revis, who’s probable in this game, figures to shut down an entire half of the field.

The Bet Is…

Under the BetUS Total of 36 points. Miami putting up 38 against Buffalo was an anomaly. Expect the Fins to pound the ball with Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown and keep Chad Henne out of trouble.

On the flip side of things, the New Orleans Saints exposed Mark Sanchez for what he truly is, a gifted rookie quarterback who figures to go through some growing pains. Expect the Fins’ defense to matchup with Sanchez and to keep the Jets offense out of the red zone for most of this game.

There won’t be a lot of offensive fireworks on Monday night, but the game should still be fun to watch as both teams bring solid defenses to the Monday night party.

One reply on “Jets vs. Dolphins Week 5 MNF Spread”

This game comes down to the Jets defense against the Miami offense. If the Dolphins cannot get their running game going early, the Jets will be able to shut Chad Henne down
