PGA Betting – The 2012 Valero Texas Open Predictions
The PGA TOUR moves to Texas this week to the Valero Texas Open at the TPC San Antonio. The field this week is somewhat short on marquee names – there are zero top 10 players in the world and only one of the top 10 in FedEx Cup points.
Valero Texas Open
April 16th-22nd, 2012
TPC San Antonio (AT&T Oaks Course) San Antonio, Texas
Purse: $6.2 million
Share: $1,116,000
FedExCup Points: 500
Defending Champion: Brendan Steele
Still, the Greg Norman and Sergio Garcia designed course will be a test for the field.
The TPC San Antonio is tough – Driving accuracy –5th toughest in 2011; Greens in regulation-4th toughest in 2011; Putting – 1st toughest in average putts made. It is the toughest Par 72 on TOUR. Matt Kuchar, my pick from last week heads the field in what should be a wide open Valero Texas Open.
The Favorites:
Matt Kuchar 9/1
Surprisingly, Kuchar has never played in this event but you can bet that he will be motivated for a good finish after a brutal 77 on Sunday at Harbour Town saw him freefall to T44. Kuchar is currently 16th on TOUR in greens hit and second in bogey avoidance. Kuchar is the biggest name in the field and with exception of a disappointing RBC Heritage has been very consistent this year.
Kevin Na 20/1
Remember the 16 that Na took last year on the par 4 ninth? Me too! This year he enters the Valero Open as one of the hotter players on TOUR – four top 10s including last week’s T8 at Harbour Town and a 12th at the Masters. He has six top-12 finishes in 11 starts this year. In a field that is void of big time stars, this could be the week that Na breaks through.
Fredrik Jacobson 22/1
Has a good track record at the Valero – T5 last year, a runner-up finish in 2010 and seven cuts made in seven appearances. He, like Matt Kuchar will be looking to rebound from a brutal Sunday at the RBC Heritage. He has the integral course management to make it two PGA wins in a row for Swedes.
The Contenders:
KJ Choi 25/1
Is kind of the forgotten man heading into the Valero but he hasn’t been that impressive yet this year. But we all know that the tougher the track, the better chance that Choi has to contend!
Johnson Wagner 25/1
Wagner will be looking to rebound from a disappointing missed cut in his last outing at the Masters. He has four top 10s this year already and was top 15 here last year. Wagner ranks 21st in greens hit and 12th in Strokes Gained-Putting – stats that can only serve him well in San Antonio.
J.B. Holmes 28/1
Holmes appears to be 100% after a year filled with injuries. He was T8 in his last tournament – the Shell Houston, he finished T11 here last year, T13 in 2010 and he has made five consecutive cuts in 2012. On a course that rewards the big hitters – Holmes could do very well.
Charley Hoffman 30/1
Hoffman has five top 15s in six career starts in this event. Logic says that he will be in contention on Sunday this year too! He finished second last year and was 8th last week at the RBC Heritage. Hoffman’s power and overall game is trending in the right direction for a win this week! [soliloquy id=”82219″]
Boo Weekley 35/1
Weekley has posted top 15s in three of his last five starts including a T6 last week and he currently ranks 2nd on the PGA Tour in total driving – perfect for the TPC San Antonio. This will be Weekley’s first start on this course but his game is as good as it has been in years.
Bud Cauley 40/1
Cauley is a name that most have never heard of but that should change soon! He is one of the young up-and-comers whose distance off the tee is a thing of beauty. He’s 23rd in total driving and 25th in all-around and may be due for a win against an average field this week.
The Sleepers:
Cameron Tringale 50/1
Tringale’s game is perfectly suited for this course – 10th on TOUR in total driving, 32nd in greens in regulation and 56th in Strokes Gained-Putting. He finished T5 here last year and in his most recent start was T8 in the Shell Houston Open.
Kevin Stadler 50/1
Stadler finished T4 last week at the RBC Heritage with a sizzling weekend. He has three top 20s in his last four tournaments and has looked good in doing so. He may be a long shot, but he is a somewhat attractive one!
The Pick:
I like Frederick Jacobson at 22/1 to follow up his country man’s victory from last week. He loves this course and he most certainly would have gotten a boost from Carl Petterson’s win last week. His game and his track record here make him a very attractive pick!
My sleeper this week is Cameron Tringale at 50/1. He has been playing very well as of late and may be due on a course that his game is well suited for.
