PGA 2012 FedEx St Jude Tournament Preview/Picks & Gambling Lines

PGA Betting – 2012 St. Jude Tournament Predictions

Sorry folks – Tiger Woods is taking the week off! And for once, he deserves it. The PGA TOUR moves to Memphis Tennessee this week for the final tune-up for next week’s US Open.

2012 FedEx St. Jude Classic
Location: Memphis, Tennessee, United States
Course: TPC at Southwind
Date: Jun 7-10, 2012
Total Purse: US $ 5,600,000
Winner’s Share: US $ 1,080,000 (19% of total purse)

Defending Champion: Harrison Frazar ($1,008,000)

Names like Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell, Zach Johnson, Padraig Harrington, and Dustin Johnson will take part in what is sure to be a very interesting pre-quel to the season’s second major.

The designers have done their best to replicate the Olympic Club, site of next week’s Open. Greens will be ultra-fast and accuracy will be a major benefit to the field this week. I had Justin Rose last week to win it all – he finished T7 – let’s see if I can do better this week.

The Favorites:

Zach Johnson 9/1

Johnson is simply on fire and deserves as his status of favorite this week. In his last four starts on TOUR he has finished runner-up twice and he won last time out at Colonial. He has played this course three times in the past and has two top-15s to show for it. He ranks fourth in scrambling on the PGA Tour stats and seventh in strokes gained in putting. Johnson simply cannot be ignored this week!

Rory McIlroy 9/1

Has missed three consecutive cuts – strange I know. He is currently second in all-around scoring on TOUR and he tied for 29th in his only appearance here in 2010 but certainly is not in good form at the moment.

Dustin Johnson 18/1

Johnson has never played TPC Southwind and he is one tournament removed from a nearly three month hiatus. He did finish T19 last week showing that he is getting back to the form we expect.

The Contenders:

Graeme McDowell 25/1

Has one start at TPC Southwind – a T7 in 2009. He has been struggling a bit of late however – missed cuts at THE PLAYERS and BMW PGA Championship. He leads PGA TOUR in fairways hit; ranks 18th in GIR but looks average at the time being!

David Toms 25/1

Toms has won this event twice – 2003 and 2004 and he has finished second here twice in his career as well. He is second on the PGA TOUR in fairways hit and 22nd in both greens in regulation and bogey avoidance – perfect for this track.

Ryan Palmer 33/1

Had a T10 finish here in 2006 but has missed the cut at TPC Southwind in his last three appearances. That said, he is playing well at the moment – top-10s in three of his last four starts, including both stops in Texas in May. Palmer is an intriguing under the radar player ahead of the St. Jude.

Fredrik Jacobson 35/1

Has endured a long layoff after his missed cut at the PLAYERS but he plays this event every year and has posted top 10s three times. He knows the course and is a threat to get back on track this week.

Martin Laird 35/1

Finished second at THE PLAYERS but followed that up with a disappointing missed cut at the BMW PGA Championship. He is ninth on the PGA TOUR in greens in regulation and leads the circuit in birdie average which bodes well for TPC Southwind.

Robert Karlsson 40/1

Karlsson has done everything but win at this event losing two years in a row in a playoff. His results overall have been lacking but his strong iron play makes him one to watch this week.

The Sleepers:

Spencer Levin 45/1

Only a meltdown on Sunday kept him from a win last week and he did finish T15 in this event last year. It will be interesting to see if he learned a thing or two last week – if he did he could contend this week based on his strong all-around game.  [soliloquy id=”82219″]

JB Holmes 50/1

Holmes erased the brutal memory of his PLAYERS experience with an impressive top 15 finish last week largely because of an impressive 67 on Sunday. If he can carry his Sunday momentum into this week, Holmes could surprise.

Camilo Villegas 50/1

Villegas loves this track – 6-for-6 with four top 20s, including top 10s in each of his last two starts here. He has been virtually silent on TOUR this year but TPC Southwind always brings the best out in him.

Jhonattan Vegas 110/1

Vegas is due for a better performance than the ones we have seen so far this year. His short game is somewhat suspect but his talent is off the charts!

The Pick:

I hate to go to the well too many times but how can one ignore the recent play of Zach Johnson? He is not a bomber off the tee but he won’t need to be at TPC Southwind. He is magic around the greens which essential on this track and most of all he is as hot and confident as any player on TOUR right now. Zach Johnson at 9/1 is my pick this week.

My sleeper is Spencer Levin at 45/1. You can bet his experience from last week will benefit him in Memphis. Karma may catch up with Mr. Levin this week and make him a winner one week before the US Open.
