PGA 2012 John Deere Classic Preview/Picks & Gambling Lines

PGA Betting – 2012 John Deere Classic Tournament Predictions

One week to go until the British Open – the majority of the favorites for that event are taking the week off. This week is the John Deere Classic with a somewhat watered down but decent field.

2012 John Deere Classic
Location: Silvis, Illinois, United States
Course: TPC at Deere Run
Date: Jul 12-15, 2012
Total Purse: US $ 4,600,000
Winner’s Share: US $ 810,000 (18% of total purse)

Defending Champion: Steve Stricker ($810,000)

TPC at Deere Run is known as an easy track – don’t be surprised to see the leaders around 20 under this weekend.

Enough talk – let’s look at a few players that should do well this week.

The Favorites:

Steve Stricker 7/1

Has won this event a stunning three straight years and will be going for four this week. He also goes into the event having four top 10s in 11 starts in 2012. He is due for a win and there is no better place than at an event he absolutely owns.

Zach Johnson 12/1

Johnson is a local guy that should be motivated to do well in his home town tourney. He finished third in this event last year and was second in 2009. Johnson ranks fifth in Strokes Gained-Putting, 16th in birdie average and 10th in adjusted scoring and should be in contention Sunday.

The Contenders:

Ryan Palmer 25/1

Palmer has been very good of late – four top 10s in his last six starts but he hasn’t fared all that well at this event – missed cuts four of seven cuts at TPC Deere Run. He is and will be better than that this week.

Jonathan Byrd 25/1

Won this event in 2007 and comes into this year’s version playing very well – seven straight cuts made including five top 25s and having placed top 10 five times already this season. Byrd always seems to be in contention and this week should be no different.

Jeff Overton 33/1

Is playing his best golf in quite a while – three straight top 25s including T17 last week. He finished T25 in his last start here in 2008 and has a decent record on this track.

John Senden 40/1

Senden won this event in 2006 but hasn’t played on TOUR since a T10 at the US Open. His ball striking is superb – he is 10th on the PGA TOUR in birdie average and fifth in GIR. Senden is a beast and could be in contention again this week.

Sean O’Hair 40/1

Got his first PGA win here in 2007 and comes in playing well – two straight top 25s including a T7 last week at the Greenbrier. He ranks 12th on TOUR in birdie average and is a name to watch this week.

Charley Hoffman 40/1

Finished T2 as recently as the Travelers a couple weeks back making it three top 25s in his last five starts. He was T15 at TPC Deere Run in 2009 and T7 in 2011. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Carl Pettersson 40/1

Finished fifth at the 2007 edition of the John Deere and has finally gotten back on track after a troubling stint the last couple of months. He has a win on TOUR and two second place finishes making him an every-week threat.

The Sleepers:

Ken Duke 50/1

He’s posted a top 10 in six consecutive tournaments including last week’s T7 at The Greenbrier Classic. He ranks 35th on TOUR in birdie average and sixth in scoring average before the cut. Placed T18 at the John Deere in 2008.

Scott Piercy 66/1

Finished T12 at the Greenbrier last week and has 11 cuts made already this season. If he could just play like he does on Sundays all week he would be very dangerous!

Daniel Summerhays 66/1

Has been playing very well this year already – four top 10s already including a fifth at the Greenbrier. He is 12th on TOUR in GIR and could contend this week.

The Pick:

It is hard to bet against Steve Stricker even at 7/1. With an average field this is his tournament to lose!

Ken Duke at 50/1 is my sleeper. He has been playing very well and may just be due for a breakthrough this week.
