LAST WEEK: So we gambled on long shot D.J. Trahan and failed at the Bob Hope Classic. But, hey, let’s not fret. He was a long shot for a reason. And an even bigger underdog, Jhonattan Vegas, won the event. The home-run picks rarely pay out but, when they do, they really do. Congrats to any psychic, er, bettor who chose Vegas. Now, onto the next tourney.

It’s Tiger time.

Yes, Eldrick Woods makes his 2011 debut this week at Torrey Pines for the Farmers Insurance Open. Are you ready? Are the sportsbooks ready for the spike in action they’re about to get? Let’s sort through the potential picks with scrambling and putting ability in mind.

THE TIGER CATEGORY

Tiger Woods
Farmers Insurance Open odds: +250

It’s still frustrating to see books inflate Tiger’s value so much knowing that people will hammer his line no matter what. But, in the case of Torrey Pines, the +250 and odds-on favorite status are somewhat justified.

Tiger struggled last year – but he didn’t play Torrey Pines, the venue at which he has won his last four starts and six times in 11 tries. He won the Farmers Insurance Open when he last played it – by eight shots. In theory, he makes for a fine pick, but what about the rust factor? He’s been working on his game but can we expect an immediate turnaround?

THE PHIL CATEGORY

Phil Mickelson
armers Insurance Open odds: +1215

Phil is a name to me but nothing more this week. He hasn’t accomplished anything special in his recent trips to Torrey Pines, even though it’s his “home course,” and his driving accuracy has been erratic of late. He does have that ability to make remarkable scrambles, so you never know, but I’d like to see Phil play a bit before assessing his 2011 outlook.

THE CONTENDERS

Dustin Johnson
Farmers Insurance Open odds: +1615

I still expect big things for the big fella in 2011 but I’m not sure the success starts this week. Johnson missed the cut at Torrey Pines last year and didn’t look good with his putter in his season debut a few weeks back.

Rickie Fowler
Farmers Insurance Open odds: +2250

The young gun is an intriguing mid-range pick this week. He finished fifth here last year and was fourth in the field in greens hit. But he’s another guy making his 2011 debut this week. Part of me thinks we’re better off choosing someone who has a few PGA rounds in, no?

Nick Watney
Farmers Insurance Open odds: +2250

He too hasn’t played in 2011 but Watney does have history on his side. He won the Farmers Insurance Open in 2009 when it was the Buick Invitational and has three top-10s in his last four tries at Torrey Pines. He’s bogeyed just 11 of his last 144 holes here.

SOLID PICKS

Bill Haas
Farmers Insurance Open odds:+3250

Haas doesn’t have a great track record at Torrey Pines but he enters the Farmers Insurance Open as perhaps the hottest golfer in the field. He leads the Tour in all-around statistical ranking and sizzled with a 62 at the Bob Hope Classic last Saturday. Maybe he’ll stay hot?

Justin Rose
Farmers Insurance Open odds: +3250

Rose isn’t particularly dialed in right now but (a) he has some work under his belt, with a pair of top-15 showings in the Hawaii swing a few weeks back and (b) I like his game for Torrey Pines. He’s among the better scramblers and putters on Tour.

Ben Crane
Farmers Insurance Open odds: +3250

That’s good value for the defending champ, isn’t it? Crane won the right way last year, leading the field in greens hit, and finished seventh here the year before. You can’t go wrong with a guy who clearly knows how to succeed at Torrey Pines.

THE SLEEPER

Ryuji Imada
Farmers Insurance Open odds: +4550

Aside from one runner-up finish, he hasn’t dominated this tournament but he’s been consistently solid. Imada has four consecutive top-20s and has made six cuts in six tries. He was a top-31 guy in scrambling and putting last season as well.

THE PICK

Given how many names I’ve mentioned, you can probably guess that there isn’t one guy really standing out. In theory, it should be Tiger. He has by far the most success at this tournament of any golfer. But he hasn’t earned back my trust yet (poor choice of words?). While I do expect a solid showing, perhaps a top-10 effort, I’ll go with another veteran whose game is a bit more seasoned right now.

Let’s try Justin Rose. He’s one of the more experienced, skilled players in the field and the tournament suits his strengths.

Farmers Insurance Open pick: Justin Rose +3250
