LAST WEEK: Right there once again. Luke Donald, our pick, finished fourth at THE PLAYERS Championship. The picks have been consistently close and within the top 10 of late; we’re due to hit any time now.

Event: Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial
Course: Colonial Country Club, Fort Worth, Texas
Date: May 19-22, 2011
Purse: $6.2 million
Winning Share: $1,116,000
FedExCup Points: 500
Def Champ: Zach Johnson

Keep an eye out for accurate ball strikers when wagering on the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial this week. Zach Johnson, not a long hitter by any means, won the tourney last year largely because he led the field in greens in regulation and was 10th in fairways hit.

THE ELITE

Jason Day
Crowne Plaza Invitational odds: +1050

The oddsmakers are all over Day, probably because he’s a member at Colonial Country Club. But I have news for you, sportsbooks: Day hasn’t won a PGA event here. Sure, he has five top-10s this season and he was fourth at Colonial in 2009, but his odds seem a bit inflated to me.

Zach Johnson
Crowne Plaza Invitational odds: +1850

Johnson hasn’t had a banner 2010 but he’s the defending champ and his 12th-place finish at THE PLAYERS suggests he may be heating up. He’s sixth on Tour in fairways hit. He’s a good bet to at least contend.

THE CONTENDERS

Ben Crane
Crowne Plaza Invitational odds: +2050

Crane is an underwhelming but respectable pick because of his skill set. He’s eighth on Tour in driving accuracy and 19th in greens in regulation. At the same time, Crane hasn’t parlayed those skills into results this season; he has just one top-10.

Matt Kuchar
Crowne Plaza Invitational odds: +2050

Kuchar’s hot streak dating back to last season appears to be over; his 54th-place finish at THE PLAYERS is his worst of the year. But his peripherals suggest he could make a comeback this week; he’s 13th in greens hit and seventh in the all-around ranking. We shouldn’t sleep on him.

Hunter Mahan
Crowne Plaza Invitational odds:+2050

Mahan is one of the more perplexing candidates this week. He has six top-10s this year and he’s 10th on Tour in greens but he’s also 0 for 7 in top-25 finishes at Colonial for his career. Do you trust the current success or the history more?

Kevin Na
Crowne Plaza Invitational odds: +2050

Na always seems to be in the hunt at Colonial, posting four top-25s in his last five tries there, and his short game is outstanding. But he has two vicious red flags: he’s 131st in driving accuracy and 167th in GIR. That’s enough for me to cross him off my list.

SOLID PICK

David Toms
Crowne Plaza Invitational odds: +3050

Toms is gaining plenty of momentum as a pick this week. He put himself back on the radar when he lost in a playoff at THE PLAYERS last week. He’s also second on Tour in both fairways and greens. The odds of two straight outstanding tournaments aren’t great for this fallen star but he has cashed in at Colonial seven straight times. He has a lot going for him.

THE SLEEPER

Jason Dufner
Crowne Plaza Invitational odds: +4550

Dufner carries plenty of momentum as the sleeper pick this week, riding two straight top-10 finishes. He also led the field in greens in regulation at TPC Sawgrass last week. He’s more than a stab in the dark.

THE PICK

There isn’t one particular pick absolutely screaming at me this week – so I’ll try something a bit different and make a speculative wager. Matt Kuchar hasn’t been great of late but his game works well for Colonial. Maybe this is the tournament to get him going. Let’s give him a shot.

Crowne Plaza Invitational pick: Matt Kuchar +2050
