PGA Betting – WGC-CA Championship Preview & Pick
Attention, darts fans. The WGC-CA Championship may be the tournament for you. The host course, TPC Blue Monster at Doral, played as the eighth-easiest par 72 last season. With rain, thunderstorms and generally moist conditions ahead this week, we should see slow greens and low scores.

When examining potential picks, we’ll keep aggressive players who can make birdies in mind.
THE ELITE
Camilo Villegas
WGC-CA Championship odds: +1615
It’s safe to say Villegas is the leader in the clubhouse for PGA Tour Player of the Year so far, with three top-eight finishes in three starts and a landslide victory at the Honda Classic last week. He leads the Tour in scoring average and placed fifth in this tourney last year, so he’s an excellent pick. His only enemy is probability; can he pull out consecutive wins?
Steve Stricker
WGC-CA Championship odds: +1415
The world’s No. 2 golfer (and de facto No. 1 until Mr. Woods returns) reappears after several weeks off. He won his last stroke-play event and all 12 of his rounds this season have been under par. Given his soft touch around the greens, we should expect him to contend. I still never fully trust Stricker against powerhouse fields, though. He’s at his best when he’s running circles around lesser competition in Mickey Mouse events.
SOLID PICKS
Paul Casey
WGC-CA Championship odds: +1615
In a sense, he’s where Villegas was last week, inching closer and closer to his first 2010 victory. He has three top-10s in three starts, he’s a bomber off the tee and he’s sixth on Tour in greens hit.
Phil Mickelson
WGC-CA Championship odds: +750
When will the sportsbooks – and bettors – learn? Again, Lefty is by far the top favorite to win, despite doing nothing to earn that status this season. For that reason, I’m no longer listing him among the elite. Still, with his almost unparalleled aggression, he’s a good play in theory. It’s just too bad he doesn’t offer any value at +750.
Dustin Johnson
WGC-CA Championship odds: +3250
Here’s a sneaky play. Johnson ranks third on Tour in driving distance, fourth in eagles, fifth in birdie average and third in par breakers. In other words, he has the boom/bust makeup needed to get into the low numbers at this tourney. He was a ho-hum 35th at this event last year but this week’s conditions should help him.
THE SLEEPER
Anthony Kim
WGC-CA Championship odds: +3550
When we talk of dynamic young golfers nowadays, Kim often gets mentioned in the same breath as Villegas. Maybe it’s his turn to break through this week. He’s an aggressive shotmaker and ranks fourth on Tour in scoring average this season. His flashy game should help him break par often this week.
THE PICK
The last time I had a hunch about Dustin Johnson, I went away from him at the last second; he ended up winning. This week, I have that same feeling again…but I’m ready to risk the same mistake. My gut tells me it’s actually Anthony Kim’s turn this week. He offers solid value and is just the type of player who flourishes in easy scoring conditions.
Pick: Anthony Kim +3550
