PGA Betting – Players Championship Preview & Pick

After all, the Players is the flashier adopted son of the “golf majors” family, widely known as the unofficial fifth major of the PGA Tour. Naturally, the tourney has a great field this week.

Let’s make a pick!

THE TIGER CATEGORY

Tiger Woods

Players Championship odds: +705

His odds are worsening by the week and we can’t blame the books for that. It’s tempting to pounce on Tiger since he finally offers decent value and has the famed mental toughness that would suggest a bounce-back from his missed cut last week. But because Tiger hasn’t trained on a normal schedule, we can’t expect him to follow any past career habits. Not only is he no sure bet to rebound this week, he hast just one top-10 in his last seven starts at the Players.

THE PHIL CATEGORY

Phil Mickelson

Players Championship odds: +805

The famed host course, TPC Sawgrass, rewards experience. The average champ here since 2002 has 7.57 career starts at the Players Championship. Phil fits the experience bill, having won at Sawgrass in 2007, and he’s also playing great right now, finishing first and second over his last two tournaments.

THE CONTENDERS

Jim Furyk

Players Championship odds: +2050

The cagey vet is quietly enjoying a solid season and finished seventh at Quail Hollow last week. He cracked the top five at last year’s Players and is fourth on Tour in scrambling – a very important stat at Sawgrass.

Rory McIlroy

Players Championship odds: +2050

He’ll draw attention this week after winning at Quail Hollow but he doesn’t fit the mold of prototypical Players winners, as he’s only played this tournament once. He’s the hot hand but I’d still look elsewhere.

SOLID PICKS

Ian Poulter

Players Championship odds: +2550

Love his makeup for the Players. He was the runner up last year and is the best putter on Tour from inside five feet, going 143 for 144. The only thing that scares me about him is his knee trouble.

Henrik Stenson

Players Championship odds: +3050

The defending champ offers decent value and his win last year wasn’t a fluke; he has three top-10s in his last four starts at Sawgrass. He hasn’t set the world on fire so far this season but that was the case entering last year’s Players, wasn’t it?

THE SLEEPER

Luke Donald

Players Championship odds: +5050

I can’t fault anyone who opts for value and takes a chance on Donald this week. The peripherals may favor him above any other golfer this week, as Donald leads the Tour in scrambling and sand saves. He’s playing fairly well in 2010 too, with four top-10s over his 10 starts.

THE PICK

With a field this stellar, we never have an easy decision. Poulter is way overdue for a win and Donald’s game is perfectly tailored to Sawgrass. But I have to go with Phil for a second straight week. He has history on his side, he’s playing his best golf in at least a year right now and he has a special motivator. If Mickelson wins and Tiger finishes outside the top five, guess who takes over the world No. 1 ranking?

Pick: Phil Mickelson +805

Tiger Woods, still ranked the No. 1 golfer in the world, will be trying to bounce back from one of the worst performances of his career this week.

For just the sixth time in his PGA career, Woods missed the cut last week at Quail Hollow, as he continues a bumpy journey back to the top of his game after an amazing fall from grace over the past five months.

But Woods is the favorite heading into this week’s Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida – the unofficial fifth major tournament on the tour.

PGA Betting Odds at have Woods as a +700 favorite to win the Players Championship, but right behind him is old nemesis and World No. 2 Phil Mickelson. Mickelson, who won the 2010 Masters, could leapfrog Woods into the No. 1 spot with a win this week.

Woods-Mickelson head-to-head matchup odds have Mickelson the slight favorite at -115 and Woods at -105.

Rounding out the top five overall are Jim Furyk (+2000), Quail Hollow winner Rory Mcilroy (+2000), and Lee Westwood (+2500).

Henrik Stenson won last year’s Player’s Championship but is way back at +5000 this year. Stenson’s win was his second on the PGA Tour, and he had to come from five strokes behind to earn the win, which matched the biggest comeback in PGA tournament history.
