Date: Sep. 09 – 12
Event: BMW Championship
Course: Cog Hill G&CC, Lemont, Illinois
Purse: $7,500,000
Defending Champ: Tiger Woods

Everyone’s looking ahead to the Ryder Cup but there’s another PGA FedEx Cup playoff tournament this week before USA and Europe clash next weekend. Who has the upper hand in the third postseason leg, which cuts the field to 70 golfers?

THE TIGER CATEGORY

Tiger Woods
BMW Championship odds: +600

Maybe the threat of missing the final playoff round – plus the confidence of being chosen for the Ryder Cup team – will create the perfect storm for Tiger this week. He won this tournament last year, closing with a sizzling course-record 62. He finished with three straight rounds in the 60s last week en route to his second straight top-12 finish. This is the most I’ve liked him as a pick in a while.

THE CONTENDERS

Steve Stricker
BMW Championship odds: +1200

Stricker enters the week as one of the Tour’s hotter golfers, having cracked the top 20 four times in his last five starts (including a win). He seems to shaking a former demon of his and playing better against elite competition over the past two seasons – in anything that isn’t a major.

Phil Mickelson

BMW Championship odds: +1600

The chance to unseat Tiger as the World No. 1 is a tasty carrot to dangle in front of Mickelson. Though Lefty didn’t do much at Cog Hill last year, he played three good rounds last week before struggling on Monday. You never know when Phil will break out.

SOLID PICKS

Jim Furyk
BMW Championship odds: +1800

The big names continue to litter my list this week, but it’s hard to argue against Furyk. He wasn’t anything too special at the Deutsche Bank but he was second at Cog Hill last year. And we’re almost positive he’ll wake up for his tee time on Thursday.

Matt Kuchar
BMW Championship odds: +2200

Has Kuchar cemented a permanent spot in my golf picks? Maybe. The Player of the Year frontrunner “only” finished 11th last week. He’s striking the ball so well week in, week out that he seems a lock to contend.

THE SLEEPER

Mark Leishman
BMW Championship odds: +8000

Sleepers don’t get much deeper than this one but I read a very cool stat about last year’s BMW Championship today. Tiger shot all four of his rounds in the 60s last year to win the tournament. Only one other player did that; Mark Leishman. Maybe his confidence will return at his old stomping grounds? He enters the week riding a 68 at the Deutsche Bank that vaulted him into this week’s field.

THE PICK

Finally, I’m leaning Tiger’s way. Call it an educated hunch. Defending champion, starting to play better, divorce finalized, and a nice pat on the back with a Ryder Cup selection. It feels like things are clicking for him at the moment.

Pick: Tiger Woods +600
