Team Sweden will begin the Medal Round of the 2010 Olympic Men’s Hockey tournament against a surprisingly tough Slovakian team that just barely won their Qualification Round game for their chance to play the defending Gold Medal Champions on Wednesday night. A win for either team would mean a date with either one of the Gold Medal favorites heading into the tournament –Canada or the Russian Federation.

Team Sweden emerged out of the Round Robin portion of the tournament as the number two seed after going unbeaten in their first three games. Sweden has been playing solid but unspectacular hockey, but it has been enough to win their Pool and put them into the Medal Round.

The Swedes have a plethora of offensive talent but have so far been led offensively by rather unlikely sources. Players like Nicklas Backstrom and Loui Eriksson have out produced the likes of the Sedin twins and the always dangerous Peter Forsberg. The Swedes are getting that secondary scoring that makes a good team even better. Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist has not been tested all that much so far in the Olympic tournament but when he has been called upon, he’s been great. Lundqvist will be drawn on more in this game against Team Slovakia and should be up to the challenge.

Team Sweden is a balanced bunch who should have the man power to defeat Team Slovakia and move on to the Semi-finals. They will need more output from their Studs in order to go deep into the tournament. Still, the Swedes have quietly put together a good tournament and could be the team with Gold around their necks once again. Online Hockey Betting at Sportsbook

Team Slovakia is one of the true surprises of the Olympic Men’s Hockey tournament. With a win over the Russians in the Round Robin, the Slovaks served notice that they are a team to be reckoned with. They have ridden the hot goaltending of Jaroslav Halak and the stellar play of Marion Gaborik, Marion Hossa and super defenseman Zdeno Chara to this point in the tournament and should continue to do so.

Team Slovakia is one of the few teams in the Olympic tournament that developed almost instant chemistry. They have been playing well together and were brought closer together after Tuesday night’s crushing hit on teammate Miroslav Satan. Satan was blindsided in a diryt hit in the game against Team Norway and will not be available Wednesday night. Look for the Slovaks to rally around their injured player, ride the goaltending of Mr. Halak and make a game out of their quarter-final matchup.

Team Sweden on paper should win this game handily. However, we have all seen what a hot goaltender can provide to a team (Ryan Miller vs. Canada). Do not count out the pesky Slovaks who will be playing for teammate Miroslav Satan and for International Hockey legitimacy.
