The end of the 2010 Olympics is near, and with that, the Men’s Hockey tournament is down to its final four teams. Canada and Slovakia will face off at 6:30 PM local time to determine who will move on to the Gold Medal game on Sunday and who will play for Bronze on Saturday.

Team Canada was a sleeping Giant that was in desperate need of a wake up call. If a close call against the Swiss didn’t do it, the loss against Team USA on Super Sunday certainly did. The Canadians appeared to be struggling with their chemistry and confidence even in their first win against Norway. The team was plain dysfunctional. Many were predicting their demise after being relegated to the Qualification Round, not knowing that an extra game was exactly what they needed to gel as a team. Questions were certainly raised about the makeup of Team Canada, but were quickly answered with blowout wins against Germany and the feared Russians.

Team Canada took a while to find their game in these Olympics. The skating, the edge and the physical play were all missing early on in the tournament. Credit Coach Mike Babcock for not allowing panic to set in. He knew that this team would eventually respond with a physically dominating performance that was advertised. The young guns, Getzlaf, Perry, Crosby, Doughty and Seabrook have all contributed and have carried the veterans to the Semi-final game. Balanced scoring, punishing physical play and the overwhelming will to win on home soil makes the Canadian team scary to play right now. The Slovaks must be shaking in their skates.

Team Slovakia also took a rather unconventional path to the Semi-finals of the Men’s Olympic Hockey tournament. They, like the Canadians needed a win in the Qualification Round for the right to participate in the Medal Round.

They beat Norway in a close game and defeated heavily favored Sweden in the Quarterfinals despite only firing 14 shots against Swedish goalie Henrik Lundqvist. Team Slovakia has nothing to lose; the 2010 Olympic Games will represent the best showing of any Slovak team in Olympic history.

The Slovaks have basically ridden the hot goaltending of Jaraslav Halak to this point. They have been getting good play out of their two superstars, Marian Gaborik and Marian Hossa as well. One cannot overlook the job that Behemoth defenseman Zdeno Chara has done to anchor Team Slovakia’s defense either. Slovakia is a team that gelled quickly, has played well, but has not come up against a team with the punishing abilities of Team Canada yet.

It appears that the clock has struck midnight for the Cinderella Slovaks. Team Canada is on top of their game and with the home crowd on their side, they will be next to impossible to beat.
