The Russian Federation will meet Canada in the Quarter-finals of the Men’s Olympic Hockey tournament on Wednesday evening in what is the most anticipated game yet. The two teams were supposed to meet, but most expected that it would be in Sunday’s Gold Medal final. As it stands, one of these Hockey Superpowers will finish no better than fifth place – shocking I know.

The Russian Federation enters this game as the third seed after the Round Robin portion of the tournament. With only one blemish on their record (an upset loss to the upstart Slovakians) and is still considered one of the elite three or four teams on the planet. The Russians showed character with a bounce back win over their rival Czech Republic on Sunday and carry a bit of momentum into the game.

Alexander Ovechkin has not disappointed so far and his supporting cast seems to be gelling ahead of their showdown with the Canadians. Although a loss in the Round Robin was unexpected, it was probably good for the Russian Federation to taste defeat, regroup and realize that there is no easy game in the Olympic tournament.

The world knows about the potent forwards that the Russians have, and they are also acutely aware that the Russians’ weakness is on defense. What nobody is talking about however is the goaltending of Evgeni Nabokov who will be front and center against the suddenly confident Canadians. The Russians will score goals, that much is certain, but they are also likely to give up a few goals. Evgeni Nabokov will have to be the difference in this game in order for the Russians to have a chance.

It took a Qualification Round game against Germany on Tuesday night for Team Canada to finally show what they are capable of. Most felt that an extra game would hurt the Canadians and that wins on back to back nights would be an enormous task. But instead, Team Canada put it all together and played the dominating style that was expected of them.

Coach Mike Babcock juggled his lines once again before Tuesday’s game with Germany and this time he seems to have found the right combinations. Jarome Iginla, Sidney Crosby and Eric Stall proved to be an overwhelming first line while the San Jose Sharks line of Thornton, Marleau and Heatley continued to play solid hockey for Canada. The Canadian defense was as good as it has been all tournament limiting mistakes and managing to create a dynamic transition game. The goaltending of Roberto Luongo was solid, not spectacular. He should earn another start against the Russians on Wednesday night.

Team Canada finally flicked the switch on Tuesday and it fans hope that it is a sign of things to come. The formula is simple for Canada, play smart, mistake free Hockey and good things will happen. This game is going to come down to goaltending.

Who would you choose between Roberto Luongo and Evgeni Nabokov? Me too.

Oddsmakers currently have Canada -1 and have curiously set the over/under at 5.5 goals.

The over 5.5 is certainly intriguing.
