The Czech Republic 2-0-1-0 = 6 points, fifth overall arrives in the Qualification Round because of their loss to Russia in their last Round Robin game. The Russians made a statement in that game that the Czechs weren’t ready to challenge yet. Even though they have had a lack of recent International success, the Czechs are still a dangerous team. They have the best player in the last 20 years (Jaromir Jagr) playing at a high level right now and they have one of the most unheralded NHL goalies Tomas Vokoun on top of his game.
If Jaromir has shaken out the cobwebs from the huge hit he took the other night, the Czech Republic should win this contest and set up a quarterfinal game with the very beatable Fins.
The Latvians likely have their tickets home already booked. If it wasn’t for the semi-crazy Qualification tournament (every team makes it), the Latvians tournament would already be over. They have no offense to speak of, a weak defense and a goaltender that nobody has, or will ever hear of again. Team Latvia’s best hope is to make a game of it and enjoy their Olympic experience – the Czech are just too strong.
For betting purposes, this is an interesting game to call. The Moneyline is unavailable right now, but the Czechs are currently -3.5.
