Finland will try to keep their winning ways going in attempts to reach the podium in their second consecutive Olympic Games when they take to the ice against Germany in their second of three Round Robin games. The Germans are proving to be tough as demonstrated by their impressive showing in their first game against another Medal hopeful Sweden.

Finland (1-0) will play its final tune up game before facing their arch rival Sweden on Sunday for top spot in Group C and an automatic berth in the Quarterfinals of the Olympic Men’s Hockey tournament. Coming off an uninspiring 5-1 victory over Belarus, the Fins will have to be better if they want to have a chance at a decent playoff seed. The veteran trio of Mikko Koivu, Sakku Koivu and Teemu Selanne are playing in their last Olympic Games and should be motivated to have a good showing ahead of their rematch of the Gold Medal Game in the 2006 Torino Olympics.

The Fins managed 45 shots on goal against Belarus proving that the offensive firepower is there. What was missing is the scoring touch that could be their Achilles heel.

Although their Friday match against Germany could be viewed as a “trap game”, Team Finland should be able to muster enough offensive moxy to defeat the stubborn German squad. After a lackluster effort on Wednesday night, the Fins have hopefully gotten the butterflies out of their system. Make no mistake about it, the Fins need to win convincingly in order to gain the confidence that they need ahead of their showdown for top spot in Group C. Online Sports Betting at Sportsbook

Look for Finland to shoot often on German goaltender Thomas Greiss and score another underwhelming victory. At this point of the tournament, every win counts and no opposing team should be taken lightly (as demonstrated by the Swiss on Thursday night).

Team Germany (0-1) may be hard pressed to win a spot in playoff rounds, but they have proven to be game competitors in this Olympic tournament. Although they have only played one game, they have demonstrated that a good team concept will make a team look better than they actually are.

Friday’s game will result in a win for Team Finland, but it has all the makings of a close, low scoring game. Team Finland doesn’t appear to be a Medal contender but anything is possible in the Medal Round.

1. Mikko Koivu is 26 years old….
2. It’s Saku Koivu, not Sakku.
