A goalie can make a huge difference in a playoff series – for better or for worse. The Boston Bruins fought tooth and nail to crack Carey Price in round one of the 2011 playoffs. In Game 1 of their second-round series against the Philadelphia Flyers, the Bruins had a much easier puzzle to solve: Brian Boucher.

They pounced on the inconsistent Philly netminder and didn’t take their foot off the gas, chasing him from the game and finishing with a 7-3 win. David Krejci and Brad Marchand scored twice each. The Flyers struggles to find a consistent starting goalie continue to plague them year after year. Through eight games in these playoffs alone, the Flyers have started Sergei Bobrovsky, Brian Boucher, Michael Leighton, then Boucher again. Who knows which puckstopper will get the call in Game 2?

Boucher couldn’t stop a puck to save his life in Game 1 but also didn’t have much help from his defense. The Flyers have plenty of size and strength on their blueline with guys like Braydon Coburn back there but it looked like they struggled with the transition from stopping Buffalo’s finesse-oriented attack to batting Boston’s bruising forecheck. The Flyers almost looked overmatched with Chris Pronger nowhere near 100 per cent.

On the bright side, it’s not like Tim Thomas was spectacular at the other end for Boston in Game 1. The soon-to-be two-time Vezina Trophy winner hasn’t been unbeatable in these playoffs

The pick:

The Flyers’ goaltending has been horribly inconsistent. However, as much as it’s never consistently good, it’s not consistently bad, either. Boucher and every goalie in the Philly stable seem to respond well after a poor performance. Game 2 has to be the Flyers’ “push back” game and I think whoever gets the call in net will step up.

The Flyers are flawed but still too good to fall behind 2-0 at home in my opinion. The sledding will be tough but I think they can find away to beat Thomas and even up the series.

Bruins vs Flyers prediction: Flyers 5, Bruins 3

Money Line:  Flyers -135
Spread: Flyers -1.5
Over/Under: OVER 5.5
