It served as a reminder to the rest of the National Hockey League playoff teams still competing in the 2011 playoffs, a caution to comfort that every franchise should heed to.

The New York Rangers’ collapse in game four of their best-of-seven opening round series with the Washington Capitals is one that will not be forgotten in the Big Apple.

It was more than just the way that the Rangers fell apart under the bright lights of Broadway, but with the tension and war of words that had been waged before the contest, the loss was truly a disaster.

Henrik Lundqvist and his teammates held a 3-0 lead heading into the final frame of game four, 20 minutes away from tying the series at two before leaving for the nation’s capital. But three straight third period goals, including back-to-back tallies less than a minute apart in the first five minutes pushed the game past regulation.

Then, minutes after killing off a penalty for Too Man Men on the Ice, the Capitals got a gift as Marian Gaborik swiped the puck out of the reach of Lundqvist and right onto the stick of Washington forward Jason Chimera.

Chimera made no mistake about it and buried the puck in the back of the net for his second of the series to give the Capitals a three-games-to-one lead, with the chance to end the series Saturday on home ice.

The comeback was led by two goals for Marcus Johansson, as Washington rallied with a furious onslaught in the third. The effort was more of what has been expected by head coach Bruce Boudreau, who got the last laugh in his battle with the Madison Square Garden faithful.

That war of words may have been the catalyst to the win as it distracted some of the pressure off of the Capitals’ players. Regardless, it is clear that Washington is a team that is determined not to let their coach down.

The Rangers not only lost the game but had to have had their spirits crushed with the way the game played out, and after such a disheartening result it is questionable whether or not this team has enough left in the tank to get back in the win column in front of what will be a hostile crowd at the Verizon.

Pick: Capitals
