After early exits in consecutive postseasons, the Washington Capitals entered 2011 with a ton of question marks. One of those was answered on Wednesday night when Alexander Semin finally ended his 14-game postseason goalless drought with the game-winning marker in the Capitals’ 2-1 overtime win against the New York Rangers in game one of their opening round series. Semin scored 18:24 into overtime to help Washington avoid a four-game playoff losing streak that would have dated back to last year’s shocking loss to the Montreal Canadiens, a series that they led three-games-to-one before unraveling to lose three straight. Now the Capitals will find out if they can get the job done again at home in game two and make the trip to Broadway with a two-games-to-none series lead.

Semin contributed on both Washington goals, assisting on Alex Ovechkin’s game-tying goal with less than seven minutes to play in regulation. That tally ended another drought, as Ovechkin had failed to score on Rangers’ netminder Henrik Lundqvist this year. The Capitals worked hard to outshoot New York 33-25 on the night, and will need to match that intensity level to avoid conceding a game to the Rangers.

Lundqvist got through to overtime with a little help from his friends, as Washington fired at least three shots off either the goal post or cross bar as they fought for that first goal. The Swedish international goalie was solid however, making a couple of key stops to keep the game scoreless, including a couple of clean breakaways. He’ll need his defense to step up their game on Friday night to match the hustle of the Capitals’ forwards, as New York gave up far too many opportunities. Wojtek Wolski managed to get on the board with an assist on Matt Gilroy’s goal less than two minutes into the third, but the Rangers will need a lot more offense from him and Marian Gaborik. Gaborik registered four shots on goal but was unable to solve Washington goaltender Michal Neuvirth.

New York was dominated in every aspect of the game except goaltending, and with game two going at the Verizon Center Friday, Capitals’ head coach Bruce Boudreau will get the favorable line matchups once again. The Rangers will have a tough time keeping that a one-goal game unless they can muster some offense, but that could be tough against a Washington team that has improved dramatically in its own end this year.

Pick: Capitals -160
