The Flyers and Sabres battled back and forth for a 1-1 series split over the weekend but, to me, the result is more concerning for the Philadelphia Flyers. For one, a 1-1 split is always a success from the road team’s perspective. But the problems go deeper than that for Philly.

Chris Pronger’s absence continues to plague the Flyers and we still don’t know when he’ll be back from his broken hand. It could be tonight; it could be next October for all we know. What we do know is that Buffalo forwards like Thomas Vanek and Drew Stafford have a much easier time in the Flyers’ zone with Pronger not policing it. We also know that the Philly power play is disorganized with Andrej Meszaros and Matt Carle running it from the point instead of Pronger.

The other major problem cropping up for the Flyers: goaltending. It only took, what, four periods for them to make a change from Sergei Bobrovsky to Brian Boucher? Year in, year out, the Flyers are just cursed with goaltending.

I’d expect Boucher to get the nod tonight but whoever starts has a tough task. The HSBC Arena can really get rocking if the Sabres score an early goal and get off and running.

The pick:

Ryan Miller allowed five goals in Game 2 but, unless his collarbone injury is still bothering him, that’s the exception, not the norm. Playing back in front of his loyal home fans, he’ll have the major confidence edge over whoever starts between the pipes for the Flyers. Philly has shown signs of mental weakness even in its own building this season, so I worry that they’re walking into a buzzsaw tonight on the road against one of the league’ most confident teams.

I like the Sabres to win tonight and I wouldn’t be surprised if Game 3 produces the most lopsided score of the series.

Flyers vs Sabres prediction: Sabres 5, Flyers 2

Money Line: Sabres -125
