It’s officially a series again. A friend of mine who cheers for the Habs said it best: “Whatever you expect to happen in the Bruins/Canadiens series ever year – the opposite will happen.” The Bruins lost two straight at home to start the series. Then they went into the Bell Centre, where they hadn’t won all season, and won Game 3.

Go figure.

The key to Boston’s success was that its best players returned to form. Zdeno Chara was back in the lineup after missing Game 2 with dehydration and he really made his presence felt with a few thunderous hits. Tim Thomas also made multiple spectacular saves, including a few when Boston was preserving a one-goal lead in the dying moments.

Suddenly, the tide turned. Montreal looked a lot more like the team that wilted and couldn’t score down the stretch in the regular season. Its smaller forwards struggled at times to get around Chara and couldn’t beat Tim Thomas when it mattered. Montreal also took a few undisciplined penalties at crucial moments in the game.

The momentum hasn’t totally shifted Boston’s way; Carey Price played well for the Habs in net and Montreal pulled to within a goal after falling behind 3-2. But it’s clear now that the Bruins aren’t ready to roll over and die.

The pick:

Though he’s growing more senile by the day, hockey guru Don Cherry had an insightful comment about the Canadiens in Game 3. They were at home – and their players stayed home.

Some teams stay at hotels during the playoffs even in their home cities so they maintain their camaraderie. The Habs went home to their families and appeared to grow soft and complacent as a result.

Price and coach Jacques Martin both noted that the team goofed off in practice on game day. The Habs had no focus.

Will they bounce back for Game 4? Maybe not unless they check into the local Holiday Inn. Montreal plays better when it doesn’t feel the pressure, when it isn’t expected to win.

The heat is on the Habs in Game 4 at home in front of their passionate but also punishing fanbase. The Bruins, meanwhile, smell blood now and know they have another game in Boston no matter what.

I like them to even up the series in another close game – but perhaps with a bit more offense this time around.

Bruins vs Canadiens prediction: Bruins 4, Canadiens 3
