Any questions about complacency setting in for the Vancouver Canucks were completely put to bed by a sweep of their five game road trip. The Canucks return home with an impressive lead in both the Northwest Division and in the Western Conference. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Wild are a true bubble team – four points out of a Western Conference playoff spot with under 20 games to play.

The Minnesota Wild are as cold as a team can be. They enter Monday night’s contest having been shut out in two straight games – 4-0 losses to both the Nashville Predators and the Dallas Stars. Minnesota’s 25th ranked offense could get a much needed boost on Monday – Mikko Koivu and Cal Clutterbuck could return from injury.

Minnesota’s strength – the defense and goaltending has let them down as of late as well as the offense. They have fallen out of the Top 10 in goals against – Minnesota is 11th in the NHL allowing an average of 2.6 goals per game. Nick Backstrom has struggled badly in his last four starts, with a 1-3-0 record with a 3.92 goals against average.

After alternating wins and losses for 12 games, the Canucks have quickly reeled off five straight wins. Any doubt who the best team in the West is? Consider the 18 point lead they have in the Northwest Division and the nine point lead they have in the Western Conference – then ask me! Vancouver is home, where they have gone 5-5 in their last 10 games looking to build on what was a very impressive road trip.

Vancouver’s offense is 2nd ranked in the NHL. The Sedins “slumped” a bit before their road trip but have caught fire! Daniel has eight points in his last three games and Henrik has seven in his last three. Ryan Kesler has shaken a mini-slump too and has the second line looking awfully dangerous once again.

Vancouver is also has the second best defense in the NHL, giving up an average of just 2.3 goals per game. Whoever plays in goal on Monday will have a good game. Roberto Luongo is 5-0-1 with a 2.15 goals against average in his last six home games against Minnesota. Corey Schneider is 2-1-0 with a 1.80 goals against averages against the Wild this season.

Betting Prediction: The Minnesota Wild are 18-14-3 on the road this season and have been shut out in their last two games. The Vancouver Canucks are 23-7-5 at home this season and have won five straight games overall.

This smells like a trap game for the Canucks. Koivu and Clutterbuck may be back for the Wild and that would be a huge upgrade on their offense. Vancouver is brutal after the first game back from a road trip – Canucks fans know what I’m talking about. My play is on the Canucks to lay an egg and for the Wild to yield a big payday!
