The trade deadline has come and gone and now we can focus games, not rumors and not persistent chatter about who may get moved to which team. The Stars were considered a huge winner at the deadline and they didn’t do a thing! Brad Richards remained with the team despite a season long rumor that he and his expiring contact would be moved. The Coyotes made a minor move, getting Rotislav Kleskla to give the Coyotes some toughness on the back end in place of the injured Ed Jovanovski.

Dallas and Phoenix are in a bitter battle in the Pacific Division and in the Western Conference standings. Dallas currently sits in ninth place in the Western Conference but they are only six points behind third place San Jose, who also leads the Pacific Division. They are only four points back of Phoenix who are second in their Division. Sound confusing? That’s because it is!

Dallas, despite being in the thick of their Division and Conference race has won two straight games after a stretch that saw them lose nine of ten. They are 3-6-1 in their last 10 games and will be without their best player Brad Richards once again on Tuesday night.

Dallas currently owns the 21st ranked offense in the NHL with an average of 2.7 goals scored per game. Nobody has been great offensively for Dallas but their veterans are showing signs of life. Brenden Morrow has three points in his last two games while Loui Eriksson and Mike Ribeiro both have two points in their last two games. It’s not great but it is production nonetheless.

Goaltender Kari Lehtonen appears to have snapped out of his slump. After going 1-6-1, Lehtonen has gone 2-1-0 in his last three starts with a 1.34 goals against average. He and the Dallas defense (16th ranked and allowing 2.8 goals per game) have to be better for this team to defy the odds and qualify for the playoffs.

The Phoenix Coyotes are in fourth place in the Western Conference but they are only four points out of tenth! Needless to say, every point in their final 20 games is crucial. The Coyotes have gone 7-2-1 in their last 10 games on the heels of eight straight wins in February. However, the Coyotes have lost three straight games overall.

Phoenix has the 11th ranked offense in the NHL averaging 2.8 goals per game. Without bonafide star power on the team, the Coyotes rely on a total team concept in the offensive zone. Mikkel Boedker has four points in his last two games, Radim Vrbata has ten points in ten games and Shane Doan has seven points in eight games.

Ilya Bryzgalov who backstopped the team to their impressive eight game win streak has also hit the skids in his last few appearances. Bryzgalov is 0-1-1 in his last two starts with a 3.88 goals against average.

Betting Prediction: The Dallas Stars are 15-14-1 on the road this season but have gone just 1-7 in their last eight games away from home. The Stars are just 3-9 in their last 12 games overall. The Phoenix Coyotes are 15-10-5 at home this season and are 5-1 in their last six at home against Dallas. The Coyotes are 8-3 in their last 11 games overall.

The Stars did nothing to improve their team at the trade deadline. It appears as though the team is willing to ride it out until their offensive and emotional leader Brad Richards returns from injury (it may be later this week!!!) That is why I expect the Coyotes to bounce back in a crucial game and to create a little more breathing room between themselves and the Stars.

Pick: Phoenix Coyotes -155
